Technical rules for the
fi
nal competition
18
Group stage
1.
The 16 participating teams will be divided into four groups of four teams.
2.
The teams in the four groups will be designated as follows:
Group A Group B Group C Group D
A1 B1 C1 D1
A2 B2 C2 D2
A3 B3 C3 D3
A4 B4 C4 D4
4.
The system of play will be the league system, each team playing one match
against each of the other teams in the same group, with three points for a
win, two points for a win in extra time, one point for a win in a penalty shoot-
out, and no points for a defeat.
5.
The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above criterion, their
rankings will be determined as follows:
b) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the
teams concerned;
c) greatest goal difference resulting from the group matches between the
teams concerned;
d) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams
concerned;
e) greatest goal difference in all group matches;
f) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.
well actually the only way that we would not progress to quarter finals is;
Spain wins by a margin of one goal and scores more than 4 goals.
At least there is no way that Spain and Brazil could cheat in this match to kick Iran out. That would be too risky for Brazil. If they'd agree on fixing the match at 5-4, there is chance that Spain will accidently score another goal, thus kicking Brazil out.
Anyway, I'm expecting Brazil and Spain to both give it their 100%. Because none of them are certain of qualification.
P.S. I will post link to the Brazil - Spain game later.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above criterion, their
rankings will be determined as follows:

teams concerned;
c) greatest goal difference resulting from the group matches between the
teams concerned;
d) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams
concerned;
e) greatest goal difference in all group matches;
f) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.
So even if Spain wins, no matter what score, Iran got 3 pts head ro head vs Spain. Don't we qualify still?
Confused as to why Spain would go through if tied in pts with Iran :/

If Spain beats Brazil, it means that Brazil, Spain, Iran are all tied at 6 points. That means that head-to-head between Spain and Iran no longer matters, because Brazil is also concerned in this rule.
So Spain defeated Brazil. Brazil defeated Iran. Iran defeated Brazil. It's a three-way then.
So then we look at goal difference between the 3 teams. If that is also equal for all teams, then they look at how many goals each of the 3 teams scored against each other.
That's where we must hope that Spain does NOT score more than 4 goals against Brazil + beat Brazil. Because if that happens, Iran will not qualify to knockout stage.
