But I have a question. Apart from football, what else is more popular on global level than sports such as volleyball / wrestling?
Tennis, Basketball, Formula one, cycling, track & fields.

Having an iranian in semi-final of Wimbledon has much more impact for Iran globally than X world champions titles in futsal/beach soccer. My point of view is maybe biaised but if I wasn't on this forum, I would have no idea about beachsoccer/futsal/volleyball competition occuring and iran good performance..

Sure, it is better than nothing to do good in these sports, specially for the olympics. And sure, football is the direct path for Iran to grow a positive image and impact in the sports world but our dumb players, agents, coaches, clubs and federations don't want it.

It would be so awesome if we had a top 5-10 tennis player in the world like Nadal, Djokovic, Federer.

No need for . We have Mansour Bahrami, a legend himself.
IRI's politics is no different than handling a pressure cooker ..... As the pressure builds up, you slowly let the steam out just a tad bit so that you don't see overflow, and once the pressure from below is less, you put the lid down again and raise the temperature.

Well we had Agassi but he didn't like to affiliate with being 'Iranian'!

I was at Bahrami exhibition during french open in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, the scoreboard showed Iran flag next to his name. In 2013, it was the french flag next to his name.
True once he said Iran (IRI) tried to prevent him to play tennis when he was younger.

Same with Aravane Rezaie who I believe played for Iran at youth level but now plays for France. Her father and self were heavily critiscized for being pro Ahmadinejad during interviews with the media.

You are 100% right on what you say.

And unfortunately our football will not improve for another 30 years.

However, I do think that we will improve a lot in many other sports, including basketball, volleyball, and even sports such as tennis and cycling.

I believe this because unlike football, these other sports are more about personal talent (and less political bs involved).

Iran's new generation has a crazy amount of talent. Adding the fact that these young Iranians are not allowed to party and have fun in the Islamic Republic, they are instead inclined to move towards sport in order to release their daily stress.

40 years ago we were nowhere in sports. Now we are continuously witnessing the rise of Iranians in various sports.

You just have to wait a little longer for formula 1, tennis, etc. But you will soon see Iranians excel at those sports too.

But just not in football. Won't happen there.

Rezai was born in France and plays for France but she trained sometimes in Iran too.

I don't think Bahrami can come back to Iran.

In tennis we are very far from producing something, our best players are very very far ranked, our davis cup teams is in 2nd or 3rd asian division. And I don't think that's a sport that passion iranians.

About formula 1, it is difficult because even if you have the talents, you have to have money and contact/partybazy to enter a team

Our next game is against brazil, right ?!

Or cycling. can you imagine how great it would be if had an Iranian team at this year's Tour de France for example?

And apparently we are not bad at cycling.

And about Formula, we did have a French-Iranian guy in Formula three. I hope he can compete at formula one someday

She and her father killed her career by publicly supporting Ahmadinejad in the French and international media. She actually stepped away from Tennis but reports indicate she wants to make a comeback.

She also played for Iran during the Muslim Games and won gold twice.

PersianFootball.com – After a phenomenal start to the tournament that marked Team Melli’s first ever victory in a World Cup opener, Iran will take on the 2nd ranked Canarinha on Sunday at 17:30, in Espinho, Portugal. A victory for either team will guarantee their place in the quarterfinals.

The two teams have only faced off once in the World Cup in 2013, when Brazil defeated Iran 4-1. But Team Melli set that record straight when they defeated Brazil 3-1 on penalties in the Samsung Intercontinental Cup later that year, en route to winning that competition for the first time.

With no subsequent clashes between the two Beach Soccer giants, Sunday’s Group of Death encounter promises to be a fast-paced and exciting visual extravaganza for the fans. A victory for Team Melli would set up a duel to the death between Brazil and Spain on Tuesday.

A victory for Marco Octavio’s men would also set a new record for the number of points obtained in the group stages of the World Cup – Team Melli has never managed to get more than three points in the group stage, despite reaching the quarterfinals in 2013.

After a disappointing performance in the Asian Championship earlier this year that saw the defending champions finish with only bronzeware, Team Melli fans are looking for total redemption by reaching the final of the World Cup in Portugal.

Match Time: Sunday, July 12th, 17:30 Local Time, 12:30 EST, 18:30 CEST, 21:00 Tehran time.

We are currently witnessing a revolution in Iranian football. Team Melli has never been stronger than it is today, and we will only get better.
