Companies sponsor a team because they want to promote their brand in that market, so they can ultimately make sales. In Iran, the vast majority of Team Melli and club kits that people have are bootlegs/ copies.
uhlsport has consistently lost money in Iran, and realistically they have done us a huge favour up until now. Some people on this forum act like uhlsport should be so happy since "we let them" sponsor us.
The federation recently had a meeting with representatives from 360 (China/ Esteghlal's current kit provider) and Joma. The marketing director of the federation called Vahid Jafari (Romario Sports, distributor of uhlsport) and even he "voted" for Joma.
You think brands are begging to sponsor Team Melli? You guys act like adidas and Nike are just dying to provide our kits. What for? So 10 million clones can get sold in Iran without 1 dollar of it going in their bankroll?

You are missing out on a big point and that is brands getting more/or for the first time exposere At the world cup with 4 billion viewers and that is invaluable for their brand name.
I've always wanted to have a Team Melli training jacket. Wanted the red or green Uhlsport one but they were sold out in Iran. Only had an XL. And that jacket is sexy.
Hopefully it'll work out and we will sign with a good sponsor.

No, I didn't miss that at all. It's not relevant. Raising brand awareness is only effective if the sponsored party has a good brand image. Iran wearing a brand (unfortunately) doesn't do anything for the company's brand equity globally, because we are not opinion leaders, nor are we "in" or "cool".
When Brazil or Barcelona wear Nike, millions of people's perception of Nike is positively affected. But when Iran wears uhlsport, the average global consumer is not thinking "wow, Iran is wearing uhlsport, this might be a great brand".
uhlsport took their chances with Iran, and they were let down. They hoped to penetrate the Iranian market because the facts and figures (population 80 mil, lots of clubs, World Cup history, etc) gave them the perception that it's a market they could be somewhat successful in. The one vital thing that they didn't factor in was that Iran is one big black market.
I mean come on... there are countless stores/boutiques in Iran that have Gucci, Versace, and Prada logos on their windows and signs, but almost everything in the store is fake. Look how chic and fashionable Iranians are... walking on the streets of Tehran (and elsewhere), you see everyone wearing every high-end brand you can imagine lol... you think they're paying 300 thousand toman for a Lacoste polo with the wages over there?

Yes I know. But who knows what happened? With all the corruption there, someone could have replaced the authentics with fakes, and it could have happened at any level of the operation. All I know is that if I wan't Iranian and had a sports brand, Iran is not where I'd be looking to expand. It's simple math.
We should be happy with the free stuff we get, because now brands are telling us we have to pay the cost price for track-suits and other things.

A reputable company if they have any value and respect for their name wouldn't go through a middle man in the first place.
