The safety of their players is a legitimate concern and diplomatic ties do not exist b/in the two countries. If the team bus gets hijacked or if a bunch of their players are kidnapped from their hotel room by the basij (not outside the realm of possibilities), what can the Saudi government do? Specially when the two countries don't even have diplomatic ties?

The Iranian regime uses our pride to get away with murder. Stop making excuses for them. If a branch of the Saudi government stormed the Iranian embassy in Saudi and all diplomatic ties were severed, would you feel safe being sent to the heart of Saudi as a representative of Iran? No. Why should they feel safe? Because of our over-inflated pride in Iran?

Azerbaijan would be a horrible idea with the Pan-Turkish idiots who support separatism from Iran. And I doubt Uzbeks would welcome Iran since we played two very controversial matches against them in the previous WCQ's.
