This team is just dreadful any way you look at. It's difficult to blame the players since they're playing the way they were brought up to play in the Iranian system; essentially a free-for-all style. We have no proper grassroots program in Iran nor do we have a footballing philosophy. For a country that loves free-flowing attack-minded football, we've historically been wasteful in front of goal and even more wasteful and indecisive with our possession. In this tournament alone, we've lost the ball countless times when players try to pass the ball to someone in a free position. What makes this team irritating in particular is that you have a clown like Mayelikohan in the staff. For years on end he criticizes the national squad and then has the audacity to demean his own players by calling Qatar a very tough opponent.
