It's a group with perspective, I see. The chance of going through this time is much higher than 2014 WCQ's.

South Korea - Arguably the best Asian side at the moment IMO, but we got their number.

Uzbekistan - Pretty overrated, and inconsistent. I think we can beat them twice, their federation and team is a mess.

Qatar - I wanted to avoid them, because of non-footballing reasons. They need to qualify for this World Cup because they are hosts for the next, so I wish we didn't have to face them.

China - I don't know much about them, we havent played them since a long time. But they are nothing to be afraid of, despite their ''strong'' league. Anything less than 6 points is a disappointment.

Syria - I expect the full 6 points from them, but we should be aware of the ''Beirut'' scenario anytime.
      totally agree

Agha Kiarash, I don't know if you are aware but Syria cannot play at home and our game with them will most likely be in Oman or somewhere. So it should be pretty easy getting the full 6 points from them.

the things is that we know what to expect from Qatar and South Korea and Syria, but China is the unknown here.

this is a team that can play the spoiler. they have spent a ton of money on football and expect their team to do well. doing well in a tournament that you are most likely not going to get through basically means play the spoiler! Beat a team that you are not expected to beat, i.e Iran, South Korea or Uzbekistan (or all three).

that's the team that kind of worries me. not knowing what to expect from them.

Qatar is not better than last time we faced them. and I would say neither is Uzbekistan. things might change, but I think we have a better team than we did last time around as well.

I'm not worried about china. I am worried about qatar and TM's first game, since we all know our track record when it comes to the early parts of a tournament. We will beat china both in Iran and in China. You can take that to the bank

Wasnt it baddavi and not alavi?

Alavi scored a goal in one of the games in that era. Nice rocket from outside the box.

I know bro, I was implying that they will park the bus like the Lebanese did and hope for a goal from one moment out of a set piece for example.

By Iraq and Syria he probably means Mosul and Raqqa where Saudi Arabia will feel safe among their ISIS proteges

I remember their coach Van Marwijk refused to go to Palestine, yet Palestine is safer than Syria and Iraq. I guess they want that everything goes according to their demands. Fuck Saudi Arabia

They're slowly becoming the second Qatar with their bribery and exorbitant spendings on their football and its infrastructure...

A lot of folks are undermining them, hopefully the team and CQ won't employ the same mentality.

"Iraqi footballers won’t play Saudis in Saudi Arabia if Iran hosting opposed: Official

President of Iraq Football Association says his country’s soccer team will not play against the Saudi team inside Saudi Arabia in a March 28, 2017 game in the third round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification games if the latter team refuses to play Iraq in a September 16 game planned to take place in Iran.

Abdul Khaliq Masood said on Wednesday that the Iraqi team, also known as Lions of Mesopotamia, favors Iran to host its home World Cup qualifiers. Nevertheless, he said, the team would face off with Saudi Arabia’s national soccer team at a third venue in case Saudi sports officials raise objections to Iran hosting the game, Arabic international newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported.

Iranian and Saudi football federations are at loggerheads following the severance of Tehran-Riyadh diplomatic ties earlier this year.

On January 3, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir announced that Saudi Arabia was severing diplomatic relations with Iran following attacks on vacant Saudi diplomatic premises in the Iranian cities of Tehran and Mashhad during otherwise peaceful rallies to protest the execution by Saudi Arabia of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

A small group of people mounted the walls of the Saudi consulate in Mashhad while incendiary devices were hurled at Riyadh’s embassy in Tehran. Iranian authorities apprehended some 50 people over the acts of transgression, and condemned the violations of the diplomatic perimeters."
