Why Mehdi Mahdavikia is Iran's greatest footballing legend

Everyone has their favourites. Anyone is entitled to say Ghelichkhani was more of a complete player, Parvin was more of an "idol", Karimi was more intrinsically talented, Daei was more of an international name, Hejazi more of a cult figure etc.... Yes, I agree with all of these. Now I don't like Persepolis and also, Mahdavikia lost a bit of his aura with the "Do zan" scandal.
But these are the reasons why I think he is our greatest of all time football personality (note this is not just his successes, but his reputation):
    Club level:
    - He is the only Iranian player who has had truly top-class seasons in Europe - topping the assist charts in the Bundesliga 2003
    - Chosen in Kicker's team of the season 2002-2003 (best offensive winger)
    - HSV player of the year twice in 2003 and 2004
    - HSV Team of the century 2012 (who else has this kind of accolate in Europe)?
    - The best single performance by an Iranian player in Europe: HSV vs Juventus 4-4 Champions League 2001 when he scored one and assisted the rest. He was a machine in that match, never seen anything like that before or since by an Iranian in Europe. And who can forget his performance against Nuremberg - he basically made all four goals for HSV, crazy.
    - The only Iranian player who was club captain for the Champions League (HSV vs Arsenal 2006)
    National Level:
    - He is our best world cup performer. In 1998 he was in Fifa official 32-man squad for the 98 World Cup , scoring a great goal and always positive going forward, we all remember how great he was. He is the only iranian player to make an official Fifa list. In 2006 even though he wasn't at the same level he still contributed the assists and seemed like one of the only threats going forward.
    - Asian Young Footballer of the Year: 1997. Asian Footballer of the Year: 2003. Top assists in 2004.
    Coaching/Since quitting
His work since quitting, which to me is the most impressive of all retired Iranian players. He has totally gone his own path:
    - Starting off as AFC's first Grassroots Ambassador in Asia - helping develop youth football in many countries.
    - Working at a complete grassroots level with his Kia Football Academy: He is almost single-handedly building an Iranian youth academy and has funded this entirely from his own pocket. Not for money, but for caring about the development of iranian football. They just came third in an international tournament, having lost in the Semis to the eventual winner Mainz.
    - His worth with Hamburg SV youth teams where he coaches everything from defence to attack. The constant reports from fans that he is the friendliest man and cares immensely about the development of each young player. Always encouraging, never disparaging, and showing lots of passion.
    Personality:
Everyone knows he is meant to be friendly but shy/timid. The "do zan" thing was certainly out of character, especially as we saw how devoted he was to his little daughter.
But despite that he has the reputation as the nicest of the Iranian players, and has a certain passion for the game which we don't see any more.
I hope he never manages in IPL and continues being the hero in the shadows, building the next generation the way he became the spearhead for a new generation himself. Except doing it the right way.

I do love & sorta miss the Brow ..!
One of my favorite TM players next to mighty AK8 & Azizi
I do love & admire him for the fact that he hasn't given up his football career completely like the other two..!
I wish him great success in his grassroots efforts & coaching ambitions.
He may not have been as talented of a footballer as the other two but he certainly was the hardest working & most Committed & professional ..! Good to see he hasn't lost much on that front yet. A true Legend ..!

ARJ sorta reminds me of the younger Kia..!

Often, when Iranian nationals move to western countries, they struggle within the system, due to lack of " work ethics "....which o comes from a relax work environments in Iran, and lack of accountabilities.
Most Iranian football legioners, once, admitted to big teams, due to their physical athletic skill sets, they lose focus, and get content....often, once getting rich enough, they get lazy, and have reduction in intensity, focus, and killer instinct.
If there are any credit should be given to mahdavikia ,was for his hard works, and work ethics......
Nothing more,...he is not even in top ten in all time talent poll.....as he himself, admitted not being the most talented player within teams he had played in.......efficiency is great.....but, it takes lot more to be the number one of a nation.

Disagree, I think his skill set was phenomenal in terms of vision, passing, crossing, free-kicks.

He had a good number of strings to his bow. Otherwise he would have been a jobbing player, not one who got more assists than anyone else in the bundesliga.

Your analogy doesn't work for a player who was a cut above the rest in champions league matches in terms of class. It wasn't just work ethic, he was very talented.

The one thing I'm quite sad about his career is how fast he declined, he left hamburg by 29 and remember he didn't get much playing time in Frankfurt and we all know Iran was his retirement home and that sad last game at Perspolis but nevertheless he was amazing at his peak.

I did feel good when for his last game, he walked around the stadium.

Kia is a good person. He has given Iran a lot and continues to contribute. I salute him for all his work.

I love the guy but he coulda done better and ended his Hamburg career on a bad note. They didnt want him but he sorta begged to stay. But overall he did have the longest career in Europe but i think in that position its easier to have a longer career in Europe than a striker like Daei or Hashemian. Nekunam i think was more consistent and better in his position but i feel like he grew up in a bad generation of our football. It was already declining. Mahdavikia was part of our Golden generation. Neku also had a long injury and his team went to shit. He shouldnt have come back to SS that early.

Disagree! Nekounam was at least on par!

Debatable again with Nekounam and his performance against Bordeaux and Real Madrid!

It's good that you like a player! but the GREATEST footballing legend is a bit of an emotional comment.

I agree with his work since quitting though!

In terms of Champions League performance, Daei beats all of them. He pretty much took Hertha into the next round of the Champions League.

I agree with you on the consistency though.
Even when he was being benched by Thomas Doll, he performed so well as a sub he had no choice but to start him again.
I just wish he didn't have such horrible back problems, and that he had played for Persepolis a bit earlier.

Nekounam was great for his club but Mahdavikia was a player of the year for the entire league in his peak seasons. There is a difference between being Osasuna's player of the year and Bundesliga's top three players of the year. Do you see that difference? If you don't I can't really help in this discussion.

Are you comparing Osasuna vs Bordeaux in the Europa League (Nekounam played well and scored a last minute goal) to Mahdavikia's complete tour the force in the Champions League against Juventus - involvement in not one but four goals (1 goal and three assists).

Mehdi, Vahid and Javad all 3 had longer European career compare to Daei. Mehdi was on top of his game for so many years compare to other legionnaires we had. Hands down he is best legionnaires we ever had. The guy is not vocal and that is reason why he doesn't get enough credit.

I remember watching Mahdavikia's games in the Bundesliga between 1999 and 2003. I don't overstate/understate anyone's accomplishments based on my personal feelings but something electrifying would happen almost every time Mehdi would get the ball out on the wing. I remember that game against Juve, I know that's only one game but he was unbelievable - and I'm a lifelong Juve fan. Mehdi was consistently performing at a similar level to that of the Juve game in the league as well. Injuries forced him to sit out for long stretches but his resolve to not sulk and battle for his starting spot is something that many of our players lack. He showed discipline and perseverance. There's a reason why he's so beloved in Hamburg, I've spoken with a few diehard Hamburg fans and every one of them view him worthy of "legend" status for the club.
