Defending is joke in Dutch league, no offense to Reza as we all love him but when a guy who had a hard time to score in Liège and Charlton is second best scorer in Dutch league say a lot about the quality of defenders.

Hey guys, I was at the game so I'll give you my 2 cents from location:
- AZ's warm up was a lot more intense than Lyon's, which also led to AZ coming out a lot more dialed on to control the game at home first 20-25 while Lyon just tried to maintain position and play easy with a couple of counters.
- A lot of people are saying Dutch league blah blah this and that.. Yes, for sure. The Dutch league has regressed a bit since there is other market places that have gotten an influx of money the last decade, but what kills Dutch teams in European competitions aren't talent, it's the naïvité Dutch teams have towards zonal marking in defense and balance on midfield. This is what partly killed AZ today. Lyon changed their formation to a 4-4-2 diamond which they used to play with Garde before Genesio so they would be far superior with Gonalons, Tolisso, Tousart and Darder against only Seuntjens and Rienstra. That's a lot of physicality and quality against two just above average Eredivsie players.
- This game could easily have been 3-3 though in the second half since AZ created a lot more chances than expected actually. If they had gotten one earlier the might have created a spark in the stadium. Weghorst missed like 2 golden opportunities, Bel Hassani missed a sitter and even in the dying seconds the were a couple of very good chances. The team was re-energized when Garcia and Friday entered up front in stead of Weghorst and Tankovic and there was a bit more movement that created some space for ARJ to run into.
- The quality showed in the individual moments. Even though AZ could have good sequences offensively, the game was killed by the individual brillance of Lyons squad. Lacazette just need a couple of seconds and some space and it's a goal every time.
- It's obvious Jahanbakhsh is the sole creator for AZ offense. Imagine that volley going in. I had the perfect angle on it and as soon as he hit it, everyone thought Lopes was going to pick the ball out of the net. Tough luck. Anyway; Tankovic has a lot of play in him, but he's mood player. Sometimes he's brilliant and sometimes it just doesn't work. Bel Hassani is overworks some situations and Weghorst is a limited specialist as a target. Defensively they were dreadful and not sharp, neither positioning nor closing down space. The only thing that was good defensively was the offensive players pressing before they got tired. They won the ball upfront a couple of times and got to half-chances or corners.
- As soon as Garcia went down and the ref called the pen, ARJ ran to the ball and had already called dibs on the pen. Super confident and aware that he wants to make an impact in Europe, I guess. Wouldn't surprise me if Reinstra or some captain figure might be the first option, but he took it.
- Ref was atrocious. Lyon got every 50-50 ball.
- That panna, though..

I was watching the game with my friend and we thought Jahanbakhsh was playing really well tonight in his new role as a midfielder. He was one of the fewer AZ players who did actually deliver. His replacement on the right wing Bel Hassani was pretty weak IMO, haven't seen much from him. Also Tim Krul is shocking.

Regarding Krul, I don't think he was that bad, he had to come out a few times but the individual mistakes in defense were more to blame for the goals conceded.

Iranian players have been showing their quality in foreign countries and top competitions, result of all the work developed in the last years. To reach this level there is only one way: giving the proper preparation and support to the fantastic Iranian talent. We should not have any doubts, it is as Benjamin Franklin said: “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
