Buoyed by an emphatic 5-0 opening win against Hong Kong, the Under-21 National Team is looking forward to a stern test against their Iranian counterparts in the FAS Under-21 International Challenge Cup final at the Bishan Stadium on Saturday night.
The Singapore Under-21s are hoping that it will be a case of third time lucky against Iran, having lost 0-1 and 0-2 when the two sides faced off in Tehran back in March.
“In that first game, we played a very good first half only to lose to a free kick 10 minutes before the end,” said Head Coach Richard Tardy.
“The second game was more difficult because the players were a bit tired (playing two games in three days) and we could not change too many players. Still it was a good test for us.”
The gulf in the standards of both sides is clear, with Iran’s senior football team currently ranked top in Asia while Singapore is placed at 28th. Thus Tardy is leaving no stone unturned in his preparations for this big clash.
“We all know Iran’s a very good team; most of their players are playing in good leagues with professional clubs,” said the experienced Frenchman. “They’re a very big country for football. Every time they go for the U17 or U20 World Cup, they are spoilt for choice of players.
“So we must prepare physically, technically and tactically to play them, because it will be a totally different game. We enjoyed more possession against Hong Kong, but on Saturday the possession will be for Iran. We must be well organised and be very strong in our recovery of the ball.
“Sometimes we lose the ball too fast and must run again (to get it back). If this happens against Iran, it will be very difficult. We must also try to take the opportunities that we can find in this kind of game; if we have two or three, we have to be ready to finish them off.”
Once again, the Singapore Under-21s will be banking on Amiruldin Asraf to produce the goods upfront.
With established forwards like Irfan Fandi and Hazim Faiz absent for this tournament, the 19-year-old Home United Prime League player was catapulted into the spotlight against Hong Kong and duly impressed with his ability to bring others into play – as well as scoring the Young Lions’ fifth goal that night.
“I was happy with my performance that night,” he reflected. “I was a bit off in the first 10 to 15 minutes, but I started to get my game together thereafter. I have to give credit to the team; if not for them, I would not have gotten my goal.
“It was great to link up with the likes of Hami (Syahin) and Adam (Swandi). I’ve been to Frankfurt for a two-week training stint with Hami, so we know each other. With Adam, he’s technically good; he can read my position and my runs so we can connect well.”
Amiruldin is especially pumped up for this game as he missed out on the double-header against Iran in March.
“I was disappointed that I didn’t manage to get a call-up for those two games,” he shared. “But it’s great that now I get this opportunity again and I’m really looking forward to this game.
“Hopefully I get to play in the first 11 again; I want to show that I can play against Iran, to compete with them and see how I cope with them physically.”
Meanwhile Coach Tardy is optimistic that the Singapore Under-21s can rise to the occasion.
“One thing about this team is that sometimes in front of better players, they also push and go up a level,” he commented. “This is what I’m hoping to see and it will be an interesting game.”Last edited by St_Mark; 07-22-2016, 04:29 AM.
