How does Iran's Team Melli make it to the Olympics?

I'm very confused. Is there a specific process to make it to the Olympics? I'm watching Rio 2016 and Japan and Iraq have made it to the Olympics. How did Iraq make it? Was there a tournament played and Iran lost?

U23 Asian cup; Iraq finished 3rd place in that tournament and Iran lost 3-0 to Japan in the quarter final

Khakpoor and MayeliKohan are one of the reasons Iran is not in Rio. Anybody would have done better than these two coaches who get selected for no good reasons.

Even if Iran was in Rio, it would be similar to other sports. We need training from very early for many years to achieve a medal.

After the 2015 Asian Cup catastrophe with the rigged officials, I don't care about AFC tournaments any longer. IMO, Team Melli's goal from now on should be only focus on qualifying for the World Cups and do well there (reach the Round of 16). The next coach should bring a B or U23 squad to the Asian Cup for that matter.

Their federation and government want them to be there and do everything for their team despite their civil war, etc. On the other hand, we have an establishment which doesn't give a damn about sports as a whole, let alone U23 team. When you appoint someone like cry baby Mayeli Kohan, there's no point in expecting any positive outcome.

If you read what treatment our Olympic athletes have been receiving, you'll get a sense of our organization and preparation for Olympics.
Our sportsmen and women, literally put a solo effort without any financial or even moral support.

It's frustrating… But Team Melli has such a bright future… Slowly we are developing a base all over the world. We have both Expatriate and Natural Iranians playing in academies all over the world right now, and we are blessed to have such a gifted manager like Queiroz (still can't spell his name lol).

I wish Queiroz would create an Iran B and C squad in addition to the U23, U19, etc, because the more structure our TM has, the more potential we have for greatness.

What else can I say, these are exciting times to be a Team Melli fan. Can't wait for Iran v Qatar!

They are not at fault. The incompetent people who select them for this job, are the reason behind it!

The question isn't "how does TM make it to the Olympics", it's "why does TM never make it to the Olympics"!

                    No true Sly jan.

There are jobs that I would not take and people also should not take.

I have refused to work for certain entities. In my view, there has to be punishment or penalty written in agreements. As there are rewards, there has to be penalties too. Then the likes of Mayeli kohan will disappear.

Then nobody will approach! Not even CQ!

But you can not compare the likes of Mayelikohan with people like you and me. Many uneducated idiots would do what ever for money and fame. Of course they can not be excused! But people up there who select coaches for a sensitive job like U23 team, should be qualified to pick the right choices. Unfortunately they're not and they didn't! They more at fault!

I watched Japan U23 vs Iran U23 game in that tournament again. We were deserved to win it in regular time by couple goals. If we had our legionnaires like Japan U23 especially Azmoun we would have won it. We totally dominated them in regular time. Unfortunately the 30 minutes extra time became completely different than regular time and our players had no more energy to run, and we conceded three goals. The head coach was too inexperienced. I blame more federation than Khakpour.

We got screwed even worse during AFC in 1996 and 2004, or else TM would have been champions of Asia on both occasions!
