i have to disagree. TM plays a 4-2-3-1. The two midfield variants that you refer two arent permanent parts of the formation, we alwaus have 2 defensive midfielders. The 4-2-3-1 allows the DMs to pivot off each other which is why sometikes it looks a v and sometimes it looks like a ^. basically if one DM is involved in the attack the other steps back to cover his position. Sometimes one DM is more of a playmaker and one is more of brute force defender. Nekounam and Ando is the classic example of this pairing.
4-3-3 is most famously used by Barcelona, its used by teams who constantly play with the ball and have most of the game's posession. Iran almost always has less posession. We build most of our attacks from the wings, with a majority of the build up play involving our full backs. 4-3-3 would imply that Jahanbakhsh is a striker, but you almost never see Jahanbakhsh in the opponents penalty box, his starting attacking postion is right in front of Rezaeian our goal against SK was an example of 4-2-3-1 in attack.
Im not saying that TM doesnt deploy 4-3-3 at all, we play 4-3-3 when we already have the lead or are in a position when we can rely on counterattacking, like the whole qatar game where we played with 3 strikers. if you notice we had more touches of the ball down the middle of the pitch in that game than we've had in any other game and ghafouri and mohammadi barely had any crosses into the box. thats because JB played closer to the two DMs vs qatar whereas in other games Shojaei/Dajagah are separated from the DMs and join play when the ball is in the final third.

^ Thanks.
Even the article states that the variation of this 4-3-3 with ^ in mid forms 4-2-3-1. In coaching classes, they no longer refer to it as 4-2-3-1 but rather 4-3-3 with two holding midfielders.
You are right about Ando and Neko's role. Neko was in bottom of V and Ando was to his right, but relatively below the left mid player, and near Neko to help him. This is the same role Hajsafi is playing for Ezatollahi. He played to his left in V form but was closer to him than Jahanbakhsh in right, in Qatar match. Jahanbakhsh would often role to front of them during the attack, or move back to their right. I love the flexibility of the formation and there is no doubt it can not only create confusion to fans but also to opponents. It requires dynamic players to float as such in mid and in front line.We thank and support Mr.Kamran Delan for many years of dedication and service to Iranian Football Community.

I agree that it is similar, however I feel that hajsafi and ezatollahi are actually better moving the ball forward themselves.
Nekounam and ando were both super solid defensively, but they were IMO distributors and less of the type of players to make runs like ezatollahi.
Maybe it was an age thing.

This article may help you understand Carlos 4-3-3 system of play. Just a note that he constantly switches between arrow down and arrow up version of 3 midfielders in different games.
4-3-3, mastery of the environment
In football, the basis of all tactics is the game device. From 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, going through 3-5-2, all tactical devices aim to define the Placing the players in relation to each other and determining their fields of action. Ilosport proposes to analyze the characteristics of the device 4-3-3.
Playing principles
The 4-3-3 is divided into two variants. On one side, the 4-3-3 with a high point and on the other the 4-3-3 with a low point. The 4-3-3 with a low point is a formation with four defenders (two central and two lateral); A low center midfielder who often plays a role as a sentinel playing in front of the defense with the mission of organizing the first raise and the game, two so-called pistons capable of projecting forward and making the link to the three attackers (Two wingers and a center-forward). This configuration requires versatile field environments (capable of defending and attacking effectively). This training generally allows better control and a better balance because the midfielders are right in the middle of the game. This system is flexible because it can be transformed into 4-4-2 if one of the wingers interposes between the Two mid-pistons and the other winger comes to lend a hand to the central striker or squarely in 4-1-4-1 in offensive phase, when the two pistons medium evolve very high to the recovery of the ball, in defensive phase when The two wingmen return to the level of the pistons to press the opposing side.
The 4-3-3 with a high point, looks like 4-2-3-1 since we have two distant midfields, having to balance the team, an axial center to organize the game, two wingers and a front -center. The difference is at the defensive level, where the first curtain consists of three players in front of the most often block the axis, when the most off-centered environments are charged to defend the sides. In a high-tip 4-3-3, attackers are less used to defend them leaving the energy needed to make the difference in the offensive phase.
Key strengths
- Improved control of the midfield in the offensive phase.
- Handy system that can be transformed into 4-4-2 or 4-1-4-1.
- Promotes high pressing.
- Promotes creativity (attackers can alternate positions, same thing for backgrounds).
- Facilitates the use of the entire width of the ground in attack.
- For the 4-3-3 (low point), facilitates the passage in 4-5-1 to the loss of the ball.
Main weaknesses
- Risk defensively and then it releases spaces in the middle of the field (obligation to pass in 4-2-3-1 in defense for better coverage).
- At the recovery of the ball, the team finally evolves only with an attacker since the two eccentrics, returned to defend low (always in case of evolution in 4-2-3-1 in defense).
- Requires a lot of physical effort for the wingmen who become defensive midfielders and offensive attackers as soon as the ball is recovered.
- Big responsibility of the midfielders to cover the free zones at the center of the game, numerous in this formation.
- Requires corridor players capable of overflowing (increasingly rare profile).

Great read from Mansoor. And just a side note, CQ's tactics answered the question which a certain troll here was obsessed with before the match, regarding why CQ insisted to hold the friendly with Iraq in a closed setting without spectators or media coverage. No one would have predicted he was planning on fitting 4 forwards into a 4-1-4-1 formation until the match started. No matter how many times his detractors get embarrassed, it doesn't stop them from bashing this man about things their feeble minds can't grasp.
