How did we get grouped with them in 1998 and 2006 then?

For the 1998 World Cup which was nearly 20 years ago Asian teams and CONCACAF teams were in different pots. For that World Cup Asian teams were grouped in the same pot with South American teams and CONCACAF teams were grouped with African teams. For the 2006 World Cup the pots were the same as they are going to be with 2018 World Cup, but the reason we got Mexico was because they were one of the teams in the pot with the top seeds.

I wouldn't underestimate Russia if I were you. They have prepared for this world cup and being a host they would be tough for any team.

Maybe some EPL scouts might spot some of our talent as well.

I think England is definitely overrated but do we match up well against them?

Kyle Walker basically cancels out Mohammadi and they play more physical than we are used to our opposition being. We can definitely keep them low score but the only goal we might get is from Stones/Smalling letting Azmoun get in between them on a header.

As for Pot 2 teams with higher levels I think we can give Netherlands and Italy trouble.

CQs style is a direct counter to possession based Dutch football.

We have some favorable matchups mainly Jahanbakhsh/Rezaian vs Blind, physical advantage in the midfield. CQ will use the tactic Real used when they beat Bayern 4-0 a few yrs ago and put a player like Taremi to double defense on the left with Mohammadi to hold Robben.

Against Italy chances will be few and far between but if we play our cards right it would be a choppy game and a tie is doable on the right day.

From a technical/tactical perspective, yes I agree that England is not the best matchup. But we have to be at least competitive with teams at their level if we want to get out of our group next year.

I don't want to derail the thread, but this is not accurate. If you flip a coin three times and they are all heads, it does not increase or decrease the chance of the next flip being a tail. That's a very basic concept in probability and statistics.
