World Cup Draw - How it works

For those of you pegging your dollars and hopes on CQ's ability to take us to the world cup without any sort of preparation, this will come to you as a surprise.

Look at the road ahead, 90% of our opponents will be ten times more difficult than South Korea. There will be no easy team and no easy group.

    Just look at this below:

    The Drawing Process
The 2018 WC in Russia will consist of 32 Teams split into 8 Groups of 4. There are 4 Pots to be drawn from. Each but the first consisting of 8 teams. Pot 1 will only have 7 Teams to be drawn as Russia as host is seeded as the head of Group A.

Pot 1 will consist of the seven highest ranked teams in FIFAs current Ranking plus Russia as hosts

Pot 2 will contain the rest of the CONMEBOL teams and all CAF teams. This Pot is short one member that will be drawn in there from Pot 4.

Pot 3 consists of all CONCACAF and AFC teams.

Pot 4 Consists of the rest of the UEFA teams.

These would be the Pots we would get. Notice that one UEFA Team will have to be drawn into Pot 2 because of the number of spots UEFA has for this tournament (14). In our case it is Iceland.

Pot 1: Russia, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Chile

Pot 2: Uruguay, Columbia, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Tunisia, Cote Dvoire, Egypt, Iceland

Pot 3: Iran, Japan, SKorea, KSA, Mexico, Costa Rica, USA, Hondarus

Pot 4: Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Serbia, Croatia, N.Ireland, England.

As you can see, probably the easiest group will be Russia, Burkina Faso, Iran, Northern Ireland.

The hardest group is: Germany, Uruguay, Iran, France.

Most likely we will get something like: Portugal, Ivory Coast, Iran, Serbia.

There is no easy path, and luck plays a small factor.... we need preparation and friendlies.

Forget Syria and forget whether the second goal was fixed or not... let's focus on the road ahead. I for one will be very excited to see what we can do against those kinds of teams.

That is what CQ has been crying all the time!

It's time to wake up and reinforce this team morally, financially, logistically and most important get decent friendlies.

This TM and coaching staff deserve and and have the potential to make history.

I truly hope next year we won't regret or suffer the same issues which damaged us before the 2014WC.

Why is CQ against having friendly matches against big teams?

He said in the past that there's nothing to gain from these matches which may inflict a heavy defeat and demoralize the team. He exemplified the Brazil friendly played a few years ago.

But putting the top teams aside, I guess the main obstacle is financing and planning.

because against weaker teams you can practice your own game flow and test your own tactics. but against stronger teams you will be boxed in a corner without even knowing your own abilities.
many coaches prefer this approach as CQ so they can prepare their teams against weaker opponents for most of the time, and will add stronger teams once in a while so their team gets a positive wake up shock time to time. its a combination of both in the end of the day.

teams like montenegro are the perfect level.

A team that has a solid chance to qualify from europe.

basically, any team that comes second in their UEFA group is a good team for a friendly.

Wow! I could see alot of group of deaths coming out of this, lets just hope ours isn't one.

That said, we had pretty good group last world cup and we f'ed up ourselves, we made Nigeria look like Brazil . So if that's the case hard or easy group makes no difference for Iran cos we'll park the bus

Apparently they used some programs online to seed them and they all came out with Germany and Iran in 1 group

WTF.. why should Concacaf and Asian teams be in same pot?
Why not Asian and Commebol teams in one pot..

people can apparently "predict" how random draws come out

Great post, thanks for the insight.

Also strikes me now that friendlies against CONCACAF qualifying teams such as Mexico and Costa Rica would be great practice, particularly as we are likely to have a South American squad involved in our group.
