Exactly as high as Greece winning the play-offs.

the chance to be in pot 3 is if we are top 23 nation. currently.

Our chances rise, if Greece qualify for World Cup via playoff. 4 of the above teams will qualify, and rest will be excluded from the list. if Greece win, this is extra point, as they rank behind us this month.

Same for New Zealand. If New Zealand can throw out an South American team, which all are ranked above us, than this makes a slot also free.

Also Tunisia not qualifying for the World Cup will make one slot for us free. they are now above us. same for cap verde, South Africa instead of Senegal. USA do not making the World Cup is also good for us ( for example via playoff).

all in all, the chances are slim, above teams have not to qualify...not very much chances and choices..

Also (although unlikely) Paraguay can still qualify, knocking out a higher ranked South American team.

No one cares who we beat, as long as we make it far in the World Cup.

Iran is laughed at by other Asians for not making it out of Group Stage.

Honestly our game is clearly more suited to this. We struggle when teams play at a high pace, even Russia tofay stretched us. Teams that play fast football and press high is a weak point for us. Teams like Italy, England , who play at slower pace is more suited for us bc we can sit back and absorb and hit on the break

Based on following playoffs:
Europe Top 4 (Switzerland, Italy, Croatia, Denmark) vs. (Northern Ireland, Rep. of Ireland, Sweden, Greece) 4 teams will qualify for the World Cup. As Greece is the ONLY Team behind Iran, it is in IRAN favor that Greece qualify for the World Cup. Also if New Zealand kick out an South American team which is above us in the ranking this will put us higher.
All in all to land in Pot 3, 8 teams which have less points compared to Iran have to qualify.

Korea Rep.
Saudi Arabia

Australia / Panama / Honduras

Morocco OR Ivory Coast (behind Iran)

If South Africa 473 qualifies instead of Senegal (have to win both matches vs. Senegal (!), this is better for Iran, because Senegal is above Iran, South Africa stay behind Iran)
New Zealand 256 (qualification good for Iran, as one South American will go out, Iran go up one step, and New Zealand be in pot 4)

Until now 7 teams are DEFINITELY BEHIND IRAN (Serbia, Nigeria, Japan, Korea Rep., Saudis, Australia/Panama/Honduras and Morrocco or Ivory Coast)

Out of Greece, South Africa, New Zealand, ONE of them have to make the World Cup for Iran beeing in Pot 3.

Also you should know, Iran can not be grouped with Japan, Korea, Saudis or Australia (if they qualify). If we really land in Pot 3, our opponents from Pot 4 can only be:
Serbia, Nigeria, Morocco or Ivory Coast, Greece in case of qualification, South Africa in case of qualification, New Zealand in case of qualification, Panama or Honduras in case of qualification.

Out of Greece, South Africa, New Zealand, one team have to qualify for Iran being in Pot 3. best would be New Zealand qualifies, land in Iran group and make sure Conmebol lose points and probably FIFA slot.

This slightly increases the chance that Senegal does not qualify, and as mentioned above if that were to happen then Team Melli moves up to pot 3 for the draw...
