A high quality keeper like Neuer or De Gea can catch those balls. Having good hand eye coordination and confidence coming off the line is an important trait for top keepers. I do not see any Iranian keeper to have demonstrated this skill and confidence. Biranvand punching the ball is a massive improvement from Rahmati who would stand still on most crosses into the box and concede during his TM days (although Rahmati had this major defect, he had major strengths that made him quality for TM, but he conceded too many bad goals to be top notch). We can get away from the Panamas of the world with Biranvand's punches, but a better team will easy score a goal from these punches into dangerous space.

Despite all of his faults, I still think Biranvand is the best option for GK at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I am worried about our GK and defense seeming weaker than 2014, but hopefully we have a few people step up. I think our defense will look better when Mohammadi is back in the lineup. The defense has had some shaky moments and we have conceded cheap goals without Mohammadi and Hosseini anchoring the defense with Pouraligangi. Cheshmi still hasn't gotten his national team confidence. PAG didn't have it early on too, but his confidence as a defender has massively improved since his early days.

If we are to succeed in Russia, we really need to pray for no injuries to our anchor players, and if we are missing anyone like Hosseini, we need someone to step up. Haghighi stepped up big in 2014 although Davari seemed like the first choice going into the tournament. Maybe someone will step up big for TM in Biranvand's place, or he will step up himself.

Gods.. I am both amused and irritated by the ignorance of some of our fans. I guess sports fans are similar all over the globe in that they pick on one or two moments during a game, to define a player.

1) Punching that ball away was the RIGHT decision, especially considering he had two Panama players on him! Are you people kidding??? He punched it AWAY FROM THE CENTER, and ended the threat. Case closed.

2) I see some here declaring Panama to be a weak opponent, and in one case, stating Russia is a stronger side. No.. just NO. Panama is tactically a bit less sound than Russia, but athletically superior, and I personally rate Panama's skill to be better. I think this is a natural assumption made by some here, simply because Russia is a European side.

3) I was very impressed with how we controlled the ball under pressure in the attacking third, especially in the first half. Generally, our players were able to receive the ball sitting on the Panamanian back-line, and create. In fact, that's exactly what led to our second goal.
