My point is... I believe Iran is more of a team now than it is about individuals. Ironically this is exactly the opposite of how we used to be traditionally. We used to rely on 1 or 2 players to score a beauty and give our team the win, something that Son has to do now for Korea.

Anyway, what about Azmoun's exposure to Bayern Munich? Or Atletico? Ajax? He played a key role in all these matches...

Someone had to nicely set him up. The guy is a finisher and I think he does not have the perfect companion in South Korean national team as he does in Tottenham.

Still, my main point is that I sense Iran has not been adequately stress-tested against really tough opponents, and midfield to offense transition is not smooth enough.

To score goals a team has to have a few clear, exercised routines that it follows like second nature. For example how to use the width of the field or position in between two defenders for receiving crosses.

If you watched Denmark's 5-1 playoff win against the Republic of Ireland in the second leg, you'd see a creative midfielder setting up their clinical striker who scored a hattrick. They did not need set pieces and used the flow of the game!

Very attractive soccer, rarely any fouls and one of the best possible results. You are not going to be ready unless you get out there and start to pore over several scenarios in real time and tune up all the problem areas. Need backups for unavailable players and contingency plans for a lineup switch midgame.

All in all, the next six months will be the make it or break it period for inexperienced teams that wish to reach the round of 16 in the tournament. Use the time wisely.

I know that FIFA rankings are used for seeding FIFA tournaments. That goes without saying.

My post was aimed at those interested in a more meaningful ranking for the purpose of actually comparing the relative strength of teams (which is, after all, the primary utility of a ranking). Nothing more, and nothing less.
