If we dont lose 8-0 I will be very happy. Even scoring against these teams would be an achievement in itself.

You are always here on this board to shit on everything to do with Iran.

Don’t expect more from an Israeli supporter - why don’t you go and also support their new best friends - the Saudi Arabians.

I'm sure there's a reason you feel this way about Iran (too many disappointments from our country or something?)... but nonetheless Montenegro is a pretty good team in Europe and got close to qualifying. If we can beat Montenegro, we can grab a draw against Portugal and maybe take something away from Spain. We'll never lose that bad to a team, the Amir Ghalenoi days are gone....

So much defeatist attitude. We need to be realistic but we can't just say were out, whats the point of even going then. Costa Rica had an even harder group than this in 2014 and made it out. And we are at the level of if not better than that CRC team

Costa Rica definitely didn't have a harder group LOL. England under Hodgson and an unimpressive Italy under Prandelli? Uruguay was a serious threat only.

Actually my priority and pretty much every one else has been the same. Getting out of the group to the knock out stage for the first time. But that looks quiet difficult right now and of course in that aspect, we got a very "bad" group. That being said, I think we are lucky we got this group because IF we actually manage to qualify from this group, then there is nothing no one can say to degrade our success. We would have earned the respect from the entire footballing world. So lets be optimistic. The way I see it, we have nothing to lose with this difficult group. No one is expecting us to qualify, not even our own fans. And that takes a huge load of the shoulder of our players. I am sure they would have been under much more pressure if we had ended up in Japans group because then every one would have expected them to succeed.

Most definitely. Being realistic doesn't mean you are being negative. Right now we need to be realistic, and accept that our chance from getting out of the group stage is pretty low. While TM is probably the strongest it has been in a long time, we needed some luck to get grouped with easier teams to get out of the group stage and sadly luck was not on our side. It doesn't mean it is game over for us, but the best we can hope for is our team showing up, and giving it everything they got. Like you said, if they do manage a miracle and get out of the group stage, that is even more proof that Iran's football has improved, against all odds.

Against Spain and Portugal, if both are at 100%, we are going to suffer.
I can't argue against what you say about our chances of qualifying. Of course our chances on paper would have been better in Japans group. Never the less, I think our players have a much better chance to get noticed and shine against the likes of Spain and Portugal than Columbia and Poland. Every spanish La Liga club official, manager and others involved in Spanish football will be sitting and watching our players play. And not even only when we play Spain but also when we play Morocco and Portugal. So if our players can put up a good fight and do well in this group, I am sure there is a pretty good chance they would get snatched up by a Spanish or Portuguese club.

Uhm, against Argentina in 2014, how well did it go for them against us?

As you know Im a big fan of Israel but Im neutral on KSA. I definitely support TM and many things about Iran. For instance the best food in the world. Amazing geography and history. You need to read many of my posts supporting Iran.

I dont however support Iranian govt or naming rights on bodies of water or Iranian cinema (gosh I hate Iranian cinema) But you know what...thats my right to free speech. I can say what I want and you can say what you want.

Back to this group and TMs chances. Realistically if we can manage maximum exposure of our players on the world stage then that is a major achievement. The other thing is what CQ said, its an awesome opportunity for our players to go up against these guys. A story for their grand-kids!

But I think its wrong for us to think so far ahead and get confident of winning against African and European championship teams with A Class players. Its only going to create heartbreak.

Dude even if we know we are weaker than all the other teams in our group, we can’t go in with the mindset of expecting to lose. If we prepare well and play with confidence, we have a chance to get positive results. Getting overconfident is another matter and we can’t have that, but if we expect to lose we might as well not show up.

I will never forget our spineless coach in WC 98 who send in the team on the last day against Germany and told them

                          Ba Aberoo Bebazid

How is the team ever going to have any chance with a losing attitude like that ?? All we needed was a victory against the weakest Germany in history, and we would have advanced from the group stage.

Thank God we have CQ who would never prepare the team like that.

You clearly misunderstood the Persian saying!

In Persian “Ba Aberoo bebazid” doesnt mean go lose!
It means give your best, that if you lose, people be still proud of your performance!
as opposed to “aberoo rizi nakonin”

Yes but it is still a very wrong thing to say to the team right before a crucial game. That German team was weak. It was behind 0-2 to Yugoslavia and had to fight back to equalize the game and was eventually eliminated 3-0 by Croatia in the Quarterfinals.

With the right mind set we could have waked off with a sweet and historic victory that night.
