We were very lucky not to lose against Thailand in Thailand, we only defeated Thailand 1-0 in Tehran, a 0-0 draw against Bahrain in Azadi (and we all know what happened in the away game), we defeated Iraq by only 1 goal margins in both home and away matches, and with regard to KSA, we couldn't score on them in Tehran until the Aussie referee gifted us with a penalty which really was not a penalty ..... and then we scored the second goal AFTER KSA was reduced to 10 men.
Don't forget that KSA played without their best player who was out with an injury (Nawaf Al-Temyat, who was the reigning Asian Player of the year at that time), and their experienced goalkeeper, Mohammad Al-Dayee. When we did win, we did so by slim margins. Some people make it seem as if we steam-rolled and destroyed our opponents under Ciro, which is totally false. These results, and the playing style which produced these results, are unacceptable given the firepower/players Ciro had at his disposal. Under CQ, however, we qualified as group leaders for two consecutive World Cups.
Ciro is a great coach, but he is not on par with CQ.
Ciro also committed a serious tactical blunder against Bahrain in Azadi. Listen to Mahdavikia's perspective at 49:15
Also don't forget that the Saudis at the time had one of their best teams in history, with Asia's arguably best goalkeeper.
Here are the highlights of the UAE game in Tehran. Look how many chances we wasted. We only hit the bar 3 times and so many one on ones were wasted. Blazevic's frustration is visible:

We were all attack, in a way that the game was "almost" being played in UAE's 18 box but many of our players, specially Karimi, failed to convert their 20 goal scoring chances each. Finally Bagheri had a lucky shot which went in and we won with only 1-0 while we should have won with 7-0. In the return leg, when Daei was back from suspension, we weer 1 man down for most part of the game but managed to win with 3-0.

I see that you referenced the intra-continental play-off matches against the UAE. Frankly, we should have never even had to go to the play-offs! With the firepower we had under Ciro, we should have qualified directly ..... but we couldn't do that!
I understand how a scoreline/result does not necessarily reflect the true complexion, or the tempo of the match ..... but when the team that you are managing (which consisted of some of the best players in Iranian football history at their peaks) only scores 1 goal against Bahrain (across two matches), and 1 goal against Thailand (across two matches) ..... you didn't play offensively, lol. In the final qualifying round, we played 8 matches, home and away, against KSA, Bahrain, Iraq, and Thailand, so we had plenty of opportunities to rack up enough points to directly qualify ..... but this repetitive pattern of falling short against teams that we should have defeated, or squeaking by with unimpressive victories cost us ..... but you refer to missed chances against the UAE in the play-offs?! If you want to talk about "missed chances", I remember Thailand almost scored an equalizer against us in Tehran late in the match!
And no, the KSA team that played against us was not among their historic best; as I said in my previous post, their GK against us in the qualifiers was a substitute keeper (Al-Fujeri) ..... who was filling in for their GK legend Mohammad Al-Dayee (who you were probably thinking of). And they missed their best player/reigning Asian Player of the Year at the time (Al-Temyat). If anything, that team was among their weakest; their disastrous 8-0 defeat in the WC was a global embarrassment for themselves, and all of Asian football. On the other hand, we had one of our most talented/best rosters in history, with players that had Champions League experience (Kia, Daei, Mehrdad), and other players with European experience (DinMohammadi, Rezaei, Samereh) ..... which was unprecedented for an Asian team at the time! This was unexcusable.
LOL, on the final match day of the qualifiers under CQ, we defeated South Korea in Korea in a competitive match for the first time since the revolution, despite the absence of our two best players at the time (Ashkan Dejagah, and Mehrdad Pooladi). With Ciro, we couldn't even beat Bahrain in Bahrain despite possessing one of the best line-ups in our history.Zendebahd Iran

Miroslav Blažević played with Iran a 3-5-2 formation I read and he also introduce new players like Rahman Rezaei, Javad Nekounam, Ebrahim Mirzapour to Team-melli
Miroslav Blažević run away very fast after we failed but Carlos Queiroz now with Iran since 2011!
on other point
Queiroz the best ever Iran had.CHECK OUT OUR FORUM RULES HERE: http://www.persianfootball.com/forums/faq.php

We had Karimi, Kia, Minavand, Bagheri, Kavianpour, Khaziravi, DinMohammadi all were midfielders with attacking desires and abilities.
But for WC I love CQs approach.
Also no one mentions the era of TOMISLAV IVIC! Although short lived, the great game vs Yugoslavia carried his signature! And we played with a similar philosophy to CQ, strong defense and good counters.Last edited by Adesor Vafaseya; 12-16-2017, 09:28 PM.CHECK OUT OUR FORUM RULES HERE: http://www.persianfootball.com/forums/faq.php
