    1988 Olympic Qualifying Campaign

What an inexperienced team. I don't believe the total number of caps amongst all players on the field exceeded 20 and yet some of these same players went on to win the Asian Games and play in the World Cup.

The Kuwaitis were drawn with Iran in the preliminary phase of the 1988 Olympic qualifiers in a home and away series in early 1987. A completely depleted Iran team would be facing them, and once again without the benefit of a home game. Although in a strange twist of fate, the Kuwaitis agreed to play both games in Doha, with the first of them being considered Iran’s home game. To replace the 14 players who had resigned, Dehdari brought in players from all across the country and even lower divisions. A 20-year old Abedzadeh was called in from Isfahan’s Tam to win his first cap. Mir Ahmadian from Melli Bank and Rahimpour from Ahvaz’s Shahin would slide into the defensive line. They would be complemented by Zarrincheh of Tehran’s 4th division Gendarmerie and Alavi from Tabriz’s Mashinsazi. Amongst the four of them, the defensive line had a total of one prior cap. At age 25 and with eight prior games to his name, Ghayeghran would be the most experienced player of the roster. He would be joined by Marfavi from Darayi, Zhaleh Mostaghim of Bonyad Shahid, Namjoo Motlagh and Bavi. Taheri of Bangladesh’s Mohammadan would be the team’s only legionnaire. Thus one of the very least experienced lineups in Iran’s history would take the field against Kuwait.

So confident were the Kuwaitis of victory that their coach declared he would resign right on the spot if he failed to get past Iran. He almost would have wished he hadn’t spoken as such. In the 64th minute Marfavi crossed into the box for Bavi who perfectly laid the ball with a header for Taheri who would shoot it past the keeper and into the net. While Kuwait would equalize later in the game, however, the result would not be decided until the dying minutes. With the home game tied at one late in the game, Abedzadeh launched a long punt down the field. The ball bounced once at the edge of the box and before the Kuwaiti keeper could reach it, Bavi beat him to it in the air and headed it in for an ultimate 2-1 win.

    Kuwait goal 21:00
    Iran goal 43:19

In spite of the victory, Dehdari changed the lineup with Mehdi Fonoonizadeh and Janfada replacing Alavi and Zhaleh Mostaghim. Much like the first leg, Asadi would make an appearance as a sub in his only two national team caps. In the return match Kuwait threw everything it had while Iran bunkered up in a defensive shell. The game remained scoreless until the 88th minute when a Kuwait player went down in the box, the third of such incidents. A penalty kick was called for Kuwait amid protests by Iranian players who claimed the player had taken a dive. Abedzadeh guessed correctly on the kick and did well to try and stop the ball, but it just barely cleared his fingertips and kissed the back of the net. The game ended 1-0 for Kuwait which enabled them to advance on the away goal rule and eliminate Iran.

How come Ghayeghran was not captain for those series? Was it punishment for him for leaving Team Melli after 1986 Asian Games (as part of the 14 players who all resigned)?

If I remember correctly he was Team Melli captain for 1988 Asia Cup and 1990 World Cup Qualification, before Panjali's return for 1989 Peace and Friendship Cup and 1990 Asian Games.

It could have been punishment. He definitely had the most experience amongst those players. Perhaps Dehdari assumed Mir Ahmadian was the future of this team.

Mir Ahmadian was living in Toronto, don't know if he is still there or not.

He kinda vanished after these games until he resurfaced 2 years later scoring Persepolis's goal against Esteghlal in the Cup Final.

I just realized that Northern Yemen was also in our group but they withdrew before the games started. All games were to be played in Kuwait with each team playing 4 games (2 home and 2 away even though all 4 would all be in the same location). With North Yemen withdrawing we were unlucky enough to still have it as home and away against Kuwait. Had they decided that it should just be 1 game in Kuwait we would have made it (assuming it would be the first game that we played and won 2-1 that would have taken place). We also would have made it if the first game was considered home for Kuwait and the second one (1-0 loss) our home game.

Rip dehdari +the war destroyed greatest talent iran soccer has ever seen.
tehran league +ghoods league which every state played each was amazing qualoty of players all around.
1980 we should won the asian cup but right before the semifinal the news of iraq attavking iran killed our confidence we lost.

                        1984 asian cup semifinal
Shahin bayani scored an owned goal late late in to the match ,and bad subs by nasser ibrahimi
                        We lost on pks

1988 asian cup semifinals DEHDARI did not invite many of our players and we lost to ksa in semi with maked Abdullah goal and ref disallowed a perfect iran goal.

Iran could of easily won 6 stright asian cups.

If therw qas no war and No dehdari.

Dehdari was very stubborn....fans him with snow balls in a game at azadi and that was ened of him god bless his soul he had no bussiness being our headcoach in that era...

I wasn't born when this match happened. So everything KC said in the first post makes sense to me after watching/editing the full match.

Kuwait looked like Brazil at times and Iran looked like 11 headless chickens. After the first 20 minutes I was unsure if I was even watching the right match. I thought it was the game where we lost 1-0. Because of how well Kuwait was playing. The first half was all/mostly Kuwait. They dominated with possession and nice plays. We played better overall in the second half but still much unorganized. We picked it up and started bullying Kuwait back in the second half. Even though Kuwait played better, both teams couldn’t build a complete play without getting intercepted or messing up. I was surprised at how neither team could hold the ball after 4-5 passes. It was unattractive football. Having the goalkeepers pick up the ball after being passed to, didn't really help the attractiveness either. Kuwait didn’t play as dirty as Persian Gulf teams did/do in the 90’s-now. Both teams played fair but aggressive, as it was a qualification match. But you could tell the Kuwaiti players respected their Iranian counterparts and vice/versa.

It's cool to go back in time and analyze older games. Football was very different 30+ years ago. Iran really is a team of dark times. They can cope and deliver in difficult situations. So this project couldn’t have come at a better time given where we are today (despite having amazing players and other obvious differences). I'm glad we won Even though the result was already determined for me

                            Hope you enjoy!

P.S. One of the Kuwaiti players looked like Carl Weathers (Pause at 0:24 and tell me that isn't Creed from Rocky) I also thought it was hilarious how the players just picked up and carried out one of our players at the end
