    Queiroz offered Iran contract extension

    By Michael Church

HONG KONG, March 14 (Reuters) - Carlos Queiroz has been offered a contract extension to remain as head coach of Iran beyond the World Cup finals in Russia, a source close to the Portuguese coach has told to Reuters.

Queiroz, who qualified the country for the World Cup in Brazil in 2014 and will lead the nation again in Russia this year, has been offered an extension until the end of the Asian Cup finals, which will be played in the United Arab Emirates in early 2019.

The former Real Madrid and Portugal head coach, who also served as an assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, took the helm of the Iran team in April 2011 but was widely expected to step down following the World Cup.

"The Iran Football Federation has presented Carlos Queiroz with a proposal for a contract extension until January 2019," said the source.

"Carlos is honoured by this approach because it not only shows recognition of the job he has done for seven years in Iran, but also confidence in the future.

"Carlos recognises the will of Iranian football to continue with him as national team coach and he is obviously touched by this proposal from a country that shows unique passion for the game and where the fans show great support.

"Therefore, he will carefully analyse this propose and take into consideration the technical and structural conditions that are important for the team."

Iran last won the Asian Cup in 1976, the third of three consecutive titles, and Queiroz has been credited by many with restoring the country's football fortunes.

He was in charge when Iran last appeared at the Asian Cup finals in Australia in 2015, only to see his side eliminated in a dramatic quarter-final penalty shoot-out by neighbours Iraq.

Iran have been drawn to face Morocco, Spain and Queiroz's native Portugal at the World Cup in June and are aiming for a place in the knockout rounds of the tournament for the first time in their history.

The Asian Cup, which will feature 24 nations for the first time, will be played in the UAE, kicking off on Jan. 5 with the final to be played in Abu Dhabi on Feb. 1. (Reporting by Michael Church, Editing by Christian Radnedge)

I never understand why the Asian Cup is 6 months after the World Cup in the middle of league play?
Move it to the following summer

Also, CQ should be given an extension til WC 2022, not just AC 2019. It's still remarkable how a coach lasted 7 years dealing with IFF. I never thought this would happen.

Great news. He wants the Asian Cup in 2019 that was robbed from us in 2015.
Right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must.

Great coach and I never thought he will be with us after 7 years of great work and I hope he will be for ever! But till World Cup 2022 it would be fine and he would be with us already 10 years!

Inshallah if GOD wants it would be a great World Cup 2018 for us. If we defead Morocco and Portugal and draw Spain even lose by 0:1 I would be happy. Carlos Queiroz is 7th best coach in the World!

World Cup 2022 Qatar is the best for us with Carlos Queiroz because Qatar is our friend and almost home and we playing near Iran it would mean that meany fans from Iran would going to support us! Even we would make a better chance and hope for World Cup 2022 a better group for us. With players like Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Sardar Azmoun moved to Real Madrid or Barcelona or Bayern München all move big clubs and Reza Ghoochannejhad, Ashkan Dejagah would be great World Cup 2022

Miroslav Blazevic was very short only WQC2002 and Tomislav Ivić but Carlos Queiroz already 7! Years.

I was disapoinment when Miroslav Blazevic just go away and he even not stay until Asian Cup 2004! Branco Ivanovic was also good 2003-2006

the reality is CQ is bigger than them, and IFF made a good desicion keeping him

Well, CQ is kinda not liked in his own country. He didn't end it well in Europe after his suspension. In Iran he finds lots of talents, lots of potential for many records to be broken, the money is good and his name has already made history. but most important of all, the people love him. He's probably never been as popular anywhere in the world as he's been in Iran. Why would he leave all this to go to an unknown future?

He knows in the AC he has the opportunity to write history even more than already! So extending further to 2019 is quite an easy decision.

Having said that, everyone who makes history, usually wanna quit when they're on top. If he extends to 2019, I doubt he will extend further to the next WC! Probably he just wanna have a shot at winning the AC as his last mark in the Iranian football and then leave.

but the point is, staying in Iran has got as much advantages for him as it has for us.

Much credit to Taj and IFF for keeping CQ till end of the AC 2019.
But I ask this question again , what if TM does poorly in the WC by loosing all 3 games ?????
Would we still want CQ to remain our coach for the AC ????

Playing in June/July under 40 degrees in Dubai is not cool.

Yes because you need to be fair. With or without CQ, this is a tough group. It's quite unlikely that we'll win a game (yes even Morocco is much much stronger than you think). The most successful outcome is if we, at the very least, reach the final of the AC. We have a high chance to do that with him.

this is a smart move by IFF

CQs contract extension should not depend on our performance in WC
