I agree on your statement as well. When looking at sources we are limited to only those that either appear online and as you say "particularly betting one". Then either we're listening to gamblers betting away their cash who may take a risk versus those who could be the same, but don't "put their money where their mouth is" which are those individuals who are risk-averse. Its kind of like if there is a war, and I have an option of enlisting myself in the army with a 95% chance that I can make it back home alive versus not doing so and getting the same result. Therefore, the pool of results also vary and could be diluted to reflect the knowledge of what everyone states whether online or offline based on the availability of the sources.

Many undermine Morocco, whereas they honestly were one of the better teams of this whole tournament. I honestly believe they were the best and most difficult side we faced in this World Cup. They deserved advancing more than the Portuguese did if you asked me. They played great football in all their 3 matches.

Honestly I would call Morocco the unluckiest team of the tourney.

Having said that, I would have to agree that our group WAS the group of death!

A group of death does not have clear favorites to advance. Our group had 2 clear favorites.
I went to Sharif University. I'm a superior genetic mutation, an improvement on the existing mediocre stock.

The real pundits don't. Before the tournament almost every podcast and article had Morocco as the dark horses of the entire tournament and said they would beat either/both of Spain or Portugal. I was much more worried about Morocco than Spain and Portugal in the days before the tournament, I don't know about some of you guys here....

During their tournament they played better than Iran, Spain and Portugal but only racked up 1 point due to naïveté (Hervé Renard is a great coach, but is no Queiroz when it comes to pragmatism) and some atrocious refereeing decisions in their games against Spain and Portugal.

After the world cup on the Guardian/Totally Football podcast, many contributors highlighted how Morocco played and said they lit up the group stages with the way they played, and were immensely unlucky.

I actually checked this the last time this topic came up and posted the results on PFDC. A simple google search indicated that most sites had Croatia, Russia and to some extent Belgium and another country that I forget listed as dark horses. I think only one out of the 20 I checked mentioned Morocco.

Where do you get that definition of Group of Death from?

I understand, you mentioned this before. The problem with "a simple google search" for any subject (football, medicine, law, tiddlywinks) is it will tend to favour trivial and BS sources over in-depth analysis with proper pundits.

I don't really care what Fox Sports, India Football Review Bleacher Report, New woke media gooz sports say about football and the world cup.

My sources are the podcasts I subscribe to with journalists in the game:

                  Totally Football show
                  Guardian Football weekly
                  The Football Ramble

That may make me biased to British football media. To be honest I don't care.

A google search does not prioritize BS sources. It may bring more popular sites to the top but definitely does not go looking for BS.
Given that only one of 20 sources I looked up agreed with you, can you show us your 3 sources that label Morocco as the dark horse? Edit: I found the football ramble's twitter feed talking about Croatia as the dark horse.

I genuinely can't be bothered to go through all the daily podcasts and pick out their quotes. It would just take too much of my time and life is short. I'd have to drown myself in whisky afterwards to answer the question "Why have you re-listened to 10000 minutes of podcasts to win an argument on an internet forum"

I'd rather just concede the argument. You win.

I see. I accept your defeat.

So a quick search I did comes up with this definition:

A group of death in a multi-stage tournament is a group which is unusually competitive, because the number of strong competitors in the group is greater than the number of qualifying places available for the next phase of the tournament.

Do you think with the way groups are currently built with the seeding system would ever allow for a group of death using your definition?
