I remember four years ago when people were shocked because CQ converted Mehrdad Pouladi into our starting Left Back, even though he had always been just an average defensive midfielder. By the time the world cup was over Pouladi was praised as one of the best Leftbacks in the whole tournament!

What this coach has to do to convince some people to stop constantly second-guessing him and trust that he knows what he's doing... I don't know!

Unfortunately when you study our history, it's VERY Iranian

Guys, if you think about it, you realize that CQ wanted to replace Seyd Jalal for a very long time. Many many months ago, before Montazeri was injured, I remember CQ had started to use him and Pouraliganji pair all the times while Hosseini was on the bench. All the way then he knew he was gonna replace Hosseini. Fortunately (since the pair were highly shaky) or unfortunately, Montazeri was injured and he had to go with reliable Hosseini for the most part of our very important WCQ games. Now in the last few friendlies you see he has been trying combination of young players in CD.

I think CQ was always certain about exclusion of 2 players from this WC since one to two years ago. 1. Andranik Teymourian. 2. Jalal Hosseini. In the first case, Ezatollahi easily stepped up and Haji Safi showed he could play well there. The latter however had to remain in TM for a long time due to lack of good replacements.

Having said that, I still don't understand Ghafouri's exclusion. When he got injured, Rezaeian played really well in TM (including against South Korea where he assisted Azmoun's goal). When Ghafouri was back from his injury, he got back to the starting lineup almost directly which showed CQ believed in him more than in Rezaeian. but then suddenly he's put on the standby list. I don't know, maybe Rezaeian's European experience made him preferable but he's been in Europe for a long time now. Maybe as someone said, his recent form made him to be preferable.

CQ's meaningless comments on the exclusions:

-Breaking News - Carlos Quieroz comments on Hosseini and Ghafouri omissions
-On Jalal - "he's always been in every squad & I respect him immensely. But it's time to look ahead & let some of next generation grow up..."
-"he's always been reliable & remains on standby if we need him. But I need to trust the youngsters and build for the future" on Hosseini
-On Ghafouri "I've spoken to him about remaining at RB at club & country. We don't need wingers as we have Alireza, Karim & Gholizadeh.."
-"seeing him at RW for Esteghlal in recent times made up my mind as we need a strong solid right back for Team Melli"

I don't see those comments as meaningless.

Ghafouri has been shining this season, yes...but as an attacking RB/RW, not necessarily for his defensive brilliance. In fact he even had some conflicts with Schafer recently who wanted to move him to RW for that very reason. Our backs will not be doing much attacking against Portugal and Spain. The attacks on the flanks will be coming from the wingers, and as CQ said we already have ARJ and Gholizadeh as better options for RW. Ghafouri will be very useful for us in the Asian Cup, but not necessarily for the counter attacking system we'll be using at the WC.

CQ is know for detail and meticulous planning in all that he does. This has been his hallmark from the time he has been coaching different club and countries. We have read countless article and testimonials from those who have worked with him on this.

He would have spend hours analysing the opponents and decided on a course of action and tactics to counter and top them in their own game. Based in these tactics he would have then decided on the best available personnel's to make up the team. Choosing the 1st choice and backup players, also catering for different tactics for the different teams that we are going to face. In the WC you cant just go through the motions if you want to go to the next level, need to take some calculated risks, sometimes they come off and sometimes they don't. But doing nothing is not an option.

CQ has take a course that he is paid to do based on a plan. He has proven this to us over and over again. He is not someone who will allow thing to just sit. It would have been so much easier to have stayed with the popular players and then blame the outcome on players. But he has surely taken, the more courageous but highly risky position of taking some players that are not that proven but fit his plans better. If the team doesn't perform all the blame will now be on his selection and him. He has gone with his experience and conviction and I applaud him for that.

I am willing to let his choose his team based on his plan, will fall behind him & TM, and pray that his tactics work.

I pretty much knew Ghafouri wouldn't make the final list (like Sly said, he's just not that versatile) and I suspect Hosseini is having fitness issues and has some work to do to make it out of standby at the expense of Khanzadeh.

My biggest shock is seeing Amiri on the list followed by a much smaller shock of seeing Dejagah in there... I hope he's in form in a few weeks but I'm not holding my breath.

At any rate, CQ must have some sort of plan, especially with announcing the list now and doing a standby and I think that's primarily to take the pressure off of some of these younger players so that they can play their game without trying too much to prove themselves.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see the list change slightly between now and the deadline... BTW, a few minutes ago Spain announced their squad too

P.S. The Spanish offense is so loaded, Morata (Chelsea, 48 appearances, 15 goals this season) didn't even make the cut!!!

Lopetegui (Spanish coach) on the selection of Iran: "It is not an easy team, in the World Cup every game is going to be a conquest and in each match we will have to give our best version, Iran will force us to play a great game. who will be a tough opponent "

Well, Amiri has always been CQ's favorite player bro. Unfortunately even if he'd break his leg, he'd probably still be in the list.

It's interesting that he prefers to bring 3 injured players. IMO, Omid Ebrahimi is too weak for the WC even if he was 100% healthy!

As for Spain........ god help us! Look at those names!
