As a few others noted, the main negative in this match was Cheshmi. Otherwise we more than held our own against a decent European team on their own turf and easily deserved a draw if not a win. For those who are too young or too clueless to understand how much we've improved under CQ, the two clips below are good examples of what it USED TO look like when we played in an opponent's home, even when the opponents were just the good old UAE.

Note how many times our keepers had to impersonate Oliver Kahn just to keep us in the game. But I know I'm wasting my time. Most geniuses freaking out about everything CQ does will not appreciate what this man has done for us until he's long gone.

Iran-Denmark, or more accurately, Hadi Tabatabaei versus the Denmark National Team in 1999:

Iran-UAE from 2010 WCQ. Rahmati basically had to channel Buffon to prevent what could have been an utter embarrassment before we scored a late goal and escaped with a 1-1 draw.

Did anyone mention how much better Cenk Tosun was in comparison to Sardar Azmoun?? This is what happens whenever you fool around in Russian League rather than making a leap to better leagues such as England, Italy, Germany where he had offers

You see this game and then you realize, is it really fair that an excellent team like Turkey is not in the WC while all other Asian teams and some African teams are?

I think Fifa should make all top Asian and some top African teams to play against the best disqualified European teams and then the winner should qualify to the WC!

The same goes to most teams in north and central America.

Cheshmi will ONLY be used in the WC when we are near the end of a game..... someone like ASHKAN has ran 4,031 miles and is subbed out ... and we basically park the bus for the last 8-12 minutes to get a draw versus Spain or Portugal ... otherwise I can not see HOW he has won himself a place as a starter based on his play with TM or Esteghlal. He is TALL but he is not fast nor nimble. And he will give away fouls if one-on-one ... meaning Penalties.

You know when we will be a good team? When we don't bekesh ziresh as soon as the match starts. That shit pissed me off so hard, i knew we would lose when we shoot the ball in the air in order to lose possession at the start of the match.

reasons HOW to improve Team Melli players and team performance:

                    > Jalal Hosseini have to come back. We are playing against strong teams, which push us back, we will defend in, around, and in front of our box and goal. Yes Hosseini is old and slower compared to the past, but he can fight in the area, where we will be against Spain, Costa, Ronaldo and Co. We are Iran, we will defend around our box, not at the middle-line as dominating team. Cheshmi, Khandzadeh won´t help us in CB. PAG and Hosseini, and probably Montazeri is the quality we have, and have to throw in..

                    > Dejagah is the next leader, which we have to make fit for at least 60, 65 minutes, specially with Ezzatolahi missing the first crucial match. he can take the leadership and connect the team together. more fit = more hope and fighting spirit. The Greece and Lithuania match should hopefully happen and Dejagah should play aroun 80, 90 minutes, to make him fit. If he does not reach the level, we have to think about other solutions. But with an in-form Jahanbakhsh, i see Dejagah in a more central/right-inside position.

                    > Vouria Ghafouri should really be considered again as right back defender, as he is more powerful, same as Hosseini, to compete. Rezaeian try, and also "try to fight" but he struggles, and he slides and tackles too much. All in all "sacrifice yourself - CQ quote about our players mentality" does not mean to slide and tackle all the time. If you slide and tackle, and do not clear the situation you are missing in the rest of the scene.... we must control and use our power better, and become more powerful in backline with Hosseini, and Ghafouri in my eyes.

                    > Beiranvand is sometimes okay and good, but also lacks experience. It is clear and obvious in Iran you become keeper by individual talent and training. we have not the same goalkeeper coaching like other countries. All in all, we have to accept that he or whoever will be our goalkeeper is just Beiranvand, not Manuel Neuer, De Gea or Buffon....

                    > We lack combination and passing football. I hope instead of soooo much instagram photos by the players and teammelli account, we try harder and work harder. Less photos and videos, more work and passing, and combination, and changing the side. still 18 days, badesh har kari mikhaid bekonid, but now it is time to work hard, harder and harder.... i hope the guys will realise this, and TM Staff.

                    > Ansarifard is our main striker, same as Azmoun, center striker (!) we used today (Taremi, Azmoun, Ansarifard and Jahanbakhsh) this is too much, i mean, who should deliver??? i said this before in halftime. i mean ansarifard is a good central striker, and i think he can do very good as central striker, and i think he can replace even Azmoun in the first eleven. But both together is one too much, as we have also Taremi and Jahanbakhsh.

                    > We had some good scenes, but this was not enough. We have to do better. Please do not say Argentina Argentina, don´t cry for me argentina felan felan...4 years over, we lost, we did good, very good match, but this is no guarantee that we will have the same against european teams. there is no guarante or rule or security formula that we will see the same for sure again, specially i do not see at the moment Pouladi, Mahini, Haghighi even Shojaei surprise performances and players. Forget about living in the past, deletun o khosh kardid be ye bazi tu jame jahani...

                    > I think we should really think about and try this performance for our first match:

                    --------------------Azmoun OR Ansarifard-----------------
                    -----------Taremi--------------------------------------------
                    --------------------------------------------Jahanbakhsh----
                    -----------------------Ghoddos------------------------------
                    -------------------------------------Dejagah----------------
                    -----------------Hajsafi--------------------------------------
                    --Mohammadi---J.Hosseini---Pouraliganji---Ghafouri*---
                    -------------------------Beiranvand-------------------------

                    * or Rezaein

and in general for The other two matches against Spain and Portugal:

                    -----------------Ansarifard OR Azmoun--------------------
                    --------------Ghoddos---------------------------------------
                    --------Hajsafi----Ezzatolahi---Dejagah---Jahanbakhsh--
                    ---Mohammadi--J.Hosseini--Pouraliganji--Ghafouri*-----
                    ----------------------- Beiranvand -------------------------

                    * or Rezaeian

                    > by the way, Saudi Arabia will do a good world cup, and they have the best chances to qualify for the next round from asian teams beside Japan. I really think Saudi Arabia right now, and i said this also in qualification phase plays dangerous football, fun-offensive football and they learned a lot, just lack experience and fighting spirit and competition, but getting in this right now. I think Saudis can even advance, specially if Salah do not make the world cup and uruguay have a bad day.

You make a very valid point, but you forget to mention that Tosun is in essence a German Football player like Ashkan. His foundation was built by the most powerful youth system in the world, not in Gonbad. Also Tosun is 4 years older than Sardar. That is generally the prime of ones career.

I think the pace overall was great from team melli, i was irritated by hajsafi for not making it 1-1, a player with experience like him should be more calm! he also had some blunders in the midfield with soft passes which easily got intercepted! i think Ghoddos should start instead of taremi, ansarifard out and play his natural position as a sub maybe. we are all or nothing against morroco in the first game and thats why i think CQ is so desperately trying to find a solution to the problem in DM position because of the stupid headstomp ezzatollahi did in the Qualifiers. hopefully he will come out victorious with his quest to finding the right replacement, which i think is really important to have a winning team in th e first game. the rest of the games im not worried about.

Maybe we can loan Radja Nainggolan. He is not selected for Belgium.

He was set to be our starter for the 2000 Asian Cup and beyond, but got injured shortly before the cup and was replaced by Parviz Broumand. After that, Blazevic took over the team for the WCQ in 2001 and he thought Tabatabaei was too short and didn't call him up. The mediocre Mirzapour took over and that was pretty much the end of Hadi's national team career.

He didn't think Tabatabaei was too short! After he came back from his injury, he was just not the same player anymore! The selected keepers were better at the time.
