The psychological importance of number 9 and why Iran ignores it

Have you noticed many countries' top goal-getters these days wear jersey number 9? If anyone deserves that designation for Team Melli, it has to be Jahanbakhsh, not Ebrahimi. Disappointed to realize nobody seems to have tuned into the implementation of the subtle but crucial motivational trick.

The player who wears number 9 is supposed to score frequent goals or at least psychologically distract opponents' defenses. I encourage you to investigate this point.

So even if this was true, surely it's better to have multiple attackers with numbers that aren't 9 so they don't get targeted and marked tightly.

If anything Azmoun would be 9, not jahanbakhsh

He is right, it is awful for some years now that ebrahimi ear number 9 as defensive middlefielder. this is wrong. take the number away and give it to Azmoun or Torabi or Gholizadeh or another offensive player.

also Torabi wearing number 2 is somehow wrong. Rezaein or Ghafouri or Mohammadi should wear this number, or another CB defender.

And on the 8.Day God created Ali Karimi, and he saw he was good!

Maybe for amateur-teams this matters. Professional Teams do research and then decide which player to mark or anything.

That's why I always say we should give Azmoun the 99 jersey. Having two 9s on his back is guaranteed to double his scoring prowess. It works perfectly in FIFA 18 but it's almost like CQ never played even FIFA 13! What kind of professional coach doesn't understand this stuff??

Number 9 is a position. Doesn’t matter what you have on your jersey. When teams scout other teams, they refer to the position. Sardar is our true 9.

Well you got the correlation right (in the sense that there is a relationship) but you got the causation wrong......

Numbers were, when it started out, linked to the position of players based on the formation that people played football in the olden days.

Number 9 is usually the player that scores the most (not in Barca or Real ) but that's because number 9 is assigned to the position of the center forward of the team.

Then when teams started to play in more modern formations (4-4-2) the number 10 became the number that was associated with the usually most important player as this player was something between attacking midfielder and the center forward. To be able to play in that position a player most be more creative than your center forward and have a higher scoring ability than your midfielders. To be able to do that you need to be fast, smart/creative, have a good shot and a good passing game.

When you have all of that you are per definition more or less the best player of the team (unless you have an exceptional number 9 or number 6). So number 10 became associated with the best player of the team (and less with the position of the player).

But still, to this day, save for exceptions, numbers are associated with position of the players on the field. So it wouldn't make sense for a RM/RW to wear number 9 at all.

I had been trying to convince Germany (my favorite team after Iran) they need to have a fixed number 9, since at least 2016 by intermittent posts on their social media. Last year in Russia they finally gave that number to Lars Stindl and it worked wonderfully as the guy scored a few important goals on the way to their first ever Confederations Cup trophy. Now that Stindl is injured, they gave Timo Werner that jersey. If you have ever listened to analysis by Roberto Martinez who manages in England, you will be convinced why having the jersey numbers in traditional setting helps clarify the role each player has in the squad and results in better functional organization. I hope you guys noted that Portugal's winning goal against France in the final of Euro 2016 was scored by their number 9, as was both goals for Turkey in the match against Iran yesterday. For Team Melli, either Jahanbakhsh or Azmoun are a fit for the central forward task, which by the way is not what a number 10 (like Maradona) is supposed to be.

Martinez is Belgium's manager at the WC.
Lukaku got the 9. But im not convinced by martinez coaching capacities

You think having a #9 at midfield is bad, take a look at HSV! FFS, they give a CB #9!

HSV also relegated, and struggeled 3 years because also not having the right No. 9 in forward position..

I think for the world cup, the numbers 1-23 must be used anyway. So the players should get the different numbers soo by June 4 when the roster will be finalized.

                            My 1-23 numbers/players:

                            1 Beiranvand
                            2 Rezaeian (Ghafouri)
                            3 Hajisafi
                            4 Jalal Hosseini (Pouraliganji)
                            5 Montazeri (not Mohammadi)
                            6 Ezzatolahi
                            7 Jahanbakhsh (not Shojaei)
8 Ghoddos (not 13, or still Pouraliganji)
                            9 Azmoun (Rezaei)
                            10 Ansarifard
                            11 Amiri
                            12 Mazaheri
                            13 Torabi
                            14 Shojaei (not Khanzadeh)
                            15 Mohammadi (instead of 5)
                            16 Ghoochanejad
                            17 Taremi
                            18 Ghoddos or Pouraliganji
                            19 Gholizadeh
20 Majid Hosseini (or Cheshmi or still Azmoun)
                            21 Dejagah
                            22 Khanzadeh (or Ghafouri)
                            23 Abedzadeh

If Hosseini and Ghafouri come in, Hosseini should get 4 and Cheshmi if he stays the number of Khanzadeh or Majid Hosseini.

Ghafouri should become 2 (Rezaeian can get 22 or vice versa. Not important that much.

Shojaei after all the years i think won´t be ready to give his number 7 jersey to Jahanbakhsh (AZ Alkmaar also No. 7 = more confidence)..

Taremi and Gholizadhe changing numbers is also a good idea. 7 is in 17 for gholizadeh while a 9 is in 19 for Taremi....
