Ashkan scored a penalty against turkey wearing Nike.
And the fact that they don't/can't sponsor Iranian players isn't new or shocking.
It does however explain why AJB switched brands.

NO IRANIANS WEAR NIKE
While team deals are important for sales of soccer jerseys, more critical for sales of boots is the sponsorship of top players, particularly the likes of Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who wears Nike, and Argentina’s Lionel Messi, in Adidas.
Nike expects 60 percent of all the players heading to Russia will be wearing its boots, including almost half the German and Spanish team and three-quarters of the Russians, even though they will be wearing Adidas shirts.
An exception is Iran, which faces new sanctions after U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of an international nuclear deal. Nike says none of the country’s players are wearing its shoes, while Adidas is providing the team’s jerseys.

This is nothing new or astonishing.
Nike, as an American corporation, can't conduct business within Iran due to sanctions. Nike can't sponsor or do business with the IFF since it's an IR-linked organization. This is all given.
Technically, Adidas can't either due to 'secondary sanctions' (Americans prohibiting any foreign company they do business with to do business with an American embargoed nation), which is one of the reasons why Adidas has been so difficult and we had practically buy our kits off the rack.
These articles are merely saying that Nike is not sponsoring any of our players due to the sanctions. I have suspicions on whether sanctions extend to individuals, rather than businesses or organizations tied to the IR, but nonetheless, let's assume it's true. Our players aren't big enough to be sponsored by Nike anyhow. I don't believe I've walked into a Nike store to see Cristiano next to Ramin Rezaian (which is Ramin's dream)..
However, this will not, and cannot, stop our players from buying Nike in the open market and wearing it during the WC. Think about it. Ashkan can walk into a Nike store in Istanbul, pay cash, and cop the latest Mercurials. How can they stop him? And how can they stop him from wearing it in the WC? They can't, and they won't. Which is why Apple products, such as the iPhone, are rampant within Iran.

Second you cannot sue because someone else wears your clothes and you cannot force someone not to wear your clothes.

Once again, I have to say, PEOPLE GET A GRIP.
What is all this over-reaction to any little half-truth that someone (anyone) posts on the internet? Some of you guys apparently can't (or did not bother to) read the original Reuters story? Where does it say that Iranian players "Can't" wear Nike shoes?Sign this petition to show opposition to US/UK support for the Rajavi/MKO cult

If true, what happened to not mixing politics with sports? FIFA should punish Nike by banning them from all football related events for a few years, demand public apology to Iran and monetary compensation for defamation of a nation amounting to $100 to each Iranian so around $8billion to be spent on Iran sports infrastructure.

The important thing really here is - why does Nike even have to comment on what Iranian players are wearing and come out saying that they are not wearing any Nikes ... man, the Iranian stigma is on full display in the media.

This could be Nike's way of showing their "patriotism" (/just stating the reality of the matter) to win back white americas' business.
They made a vague statement that sensitive Iranians and anti-US people can overreact to. And xenophobic/racist white americans can read into as pro-murica and anti-Iran.
