I think from point of view of Russia NT, they are better off finishing second in the group than first.

That way, their R-16 match (most likely against an Iberian side, or IRAN of course ) will be in Moscow Luzhinsky as opposed to in 35-degree Sochi. Not like there is a huge difference between Spain and Portugal assuming we don't pull the miracle especially with Portugal's especialty in KO rounds. Also, the B-D-F-H bracket looks much easier, should they win that and want to progress to Semis.
