How did we get screwed?

it may have been the correct call, but the problem with the VAR is the selective time and ways it is used. Yes, if 100% of the close calls always went through video, you could say it is fair. Ofcourse that is not possible.

Many more calls in all of this WC could have been reversed through VAR, but it was not used. Maybe I'm pessimistic, but I think in the reverse situation, with Spain scoring in the same scenario, maybe the refs would not have gone to the VAR.

I think they need to limit the VAR in where and how it is used, much like it is in the US with other sports. Limit it to goal line calls, fake dives to get redcards or even deflections or non-deflections for corner kicks.
To open it up to offsides, penalties, is too open ended.
