i criticized Azmoun after the Morocco and Spain games. that was for lack of effort based on what i saw. today i just do not understand the wide criticism of Taremi. He was absolutely a nightmare for the Portuguese defense all game long. Along with Azmoun they had wrecked havoc , they fought and put tremendous amount of pressure on them. Taremi took the shot that he should have taken and simply missed. how can that be criticized. had he squandered the opportunity and passed up the shot or completely mishit it, i could see why people would be upset. but he took the shot and narrowly missed. this happens all the time in soccer. This team played with so much heart, so much resilience , so much passion that i could not take one thing the did or didnt do as criticism. you want to blame someone ? go ahead and blame the Mollas. we are the only nation that went to WC with only 2 friendlies. 2 FRIENDLIES? are you kidding me? Saudis had 7 friendlies and they were the clowns of the tournament. We all need to hold every players hand and get them up and let them know how proud of them we are. Beiranvand is now a global hero. the world knows his history. We are the Cinderella of the WC without going through to the next round. just give Carlos an Iranian Citizenship and keep him for ever.

Nicely written article describing the uncalled penalty the ronaldo discount. I hope Enrique Caceres suffers unspeakable misery for the rest of his days.

Just got back to Moscow from Saransk. After the game I just couldn't stop crying. We were so close to making history topping the group of death and later on facing Russia in round of 16 and possibly going to the top 8 team.
So many ifs in this world cup. What if we would have tied with spain, what if that taremi shot would have gone in. What if Morocco would have tied with Portugal. Aaaaaaaargh so frustrating.
I was pretty skeptical that Carlos hadn't chosen Hosseini and Vouria but he has proven that he's a world class coach for a reason. We shouldn't doubt any of his decisions as he has time and time again prove us wrong.
A big thank you to our players, coaching staff and all those fans who traveled from all around the world. It was an exteremly fun world cup to experience. Definetly better than Brazil.

Overall a great World Cup for us.
It could have obviously been better but I truly thought we were only going to come away with 1 point from Morocco.
Tactically: We were spot on in every game. We conceded on individual brilliance or pure luck.
Physically: We were up for every challenge and manhandled pretty much every team. Like Germany of the late 80s and early 90s. Just phenomenal and the are I believe we have made the most progress in. This is one area where we have always had the potential, just lack of execution.
Execution: This is where we were average at best. The style we play is such that we get few opportunities to score. And to truly take advantage we have to be clinical and very efficient. I don't know how to simulate such moments, because even the best friendlies won't create such pressure and urgency.
Only way is for our players to play at the highest levels in Europe. We need a few players who have decent Champions League experience or title run experience in the big 4. Guys who play must win games and are at a level where they know the cost of a mistake and the value of a clutch finish.
Players:
Beiranvand: 9/10. Would be 10/10 if it wasn't for a few nerves at the beginning of the game. He has rehabilitated his image and should play in Europe. The Ronaldo save was so sweet. Persepolis can make some good money off of him considering he has a 3-5 year contract.
Rezaeian: 8/10. He was wonderful. His nerves have calmed down so much and he was relatively mistake free. He was hungry, ambitious and didn't take shit from anyone. This Ramin can be our RB for another 2 World Cups.
Majid Hosseini: 8/10. Love this kid. He is so calm and quiet and gets the job done. He has 4 caps, but played like a man with 100 caps. A great solution for our future CB.
PAG: 8/10: Pure professional. Should be in Europe. His vertical is amazing and he did great to piss off CR7.
Hajisafi: 7/10. Offensively very composed and deliberate. Defensively still a wreck and risk.
Ezatollahi: 7/10. A little naive, but he's very young. We have a DM for the next 12 years if he can take care of himself and remain injury free. The experience he has gained is priceless. Must move to a better club.
Ebrahimi: A tank and a workhorse. Proved me wrong so many times. Where was this form 4 years ago? or even 2 years ago? Well done CQ for getting the most out of him and Ebrahimi for stepping it up.
ARJ: 6.5/10 - He's one of the guys we really rely on offensively. He was great and actually didn't make many mistakes - we just need him to find that bit of space or make that one last dribble in a key spot. He wasn't able to do that. He needs to go to a better league.
Taremi: 7.5/10 - Another workhorse and tank. He was at the right place in the right time every game. He can handle European defenders and isn't afraid of shit. Just needs better composure. Must move to Europe.
Amiri: 8/10: Lur power! what a beast. Energizer battery. If only he was a better finisher/shooter.
Azmoun: 6.5/10. He is so up and down. His flick-ons and aerial battles were great, but he is noticeably much weaker on the ground. He is one of our most talented so I expect a lot from him. Must move to a better club. Needs to work on his mental game.
Ghodoos: 8/10. Every touch he had was dangerous. He will get more time going forward and be an integral part of our TM. Damesh garm.
Ansarifard: 7/10. Clutch penalty. Great runner. He did what he could.
Mohammadi: 8/10. Beautiful in every tackle, run, play. Always got back and gave it his all. I hope he doesn't make dumb decisions like Pouladi.

As much as Azmoun's aerial battles were great and almost error-free, his footwork left A LOT to be desired. (Ironic that, again, the Fox TV commentators brought up the messi tag, ... which is just painful to hear now. stop it , please. I beg you.)
against morocco, he lost the ball and almost stepped ON it, which lost the momentum and allowed the defenders to catch up and eventually scoffed the shot.
against spain also he tried dribbling once or twice and failed again.
then the same against portugal, where his attempt at dribbling failed badly.
I think he is OK with dribbling or footwork ... for asian level or in less stressful matches. But he SHOULD be able to do more, as that gives him fantastic openings and chances to score.

I've been seeing this a lot, but some people keep saying that "Portugal should never have been in the position to begin with, that penalty shouldn't have counted."
I don't know whether it is Portuguese fanboys having their egos hurt after their team struggled against one that wasn't even rated going into the WC, or if its just the reddit hive-mind, but i has really been pissing me off lately.
"Portugal should have never been in that position." Yeah in a way they are right. Morocco had two clear cut penalties denied against Portugal. Ronaldo should have gotten a red card (The ball was 10 meters away and in Beiranvands hands, his elbow was in an unnaturally high position showing it was clearly malicious). Three 50/50 penalties were not called in our favor or even checked for VAR while Ronaldo's 50/50 penalty was. This could very well have ended with Portugal crashing out with 0 wins and 3 draws or 2 draws and a loss, so yes they should've never been in that position. They have had enough favors in this world cup if you ask me. Even Ronaldo's penalty call against Spain would only be given half the time, especially if it was a smaller name doing that sort of dribble and exaggerated fall.
