One of the greatest and most efficient players in Team Melli history.

Our tactics and the course of the games, didn't allow him to get any playing time, but he could surely contribute to reaching the Asian glory.

We will never forget your super-goal in Seoul which made a nation proud!

    Damet Garm Reza!

This is very unlike his character and an unwelcome gesture towards Team Melli at this time. I believe he wrote that letter under pressure from his wife who seems like someone who is very shallow and materialistic and just upset that her husband not playing in the World Cup for her to show off about it. Now that I read this, I wish CQ had taken Kaveh or another younger player to Russia in his place.

Not a bad TM career at all, we achieved a lot thanks to him. Surprised he isn't waiting for the AFC Asian Cup but it's down to him, I guess. No frightening loss to tge current TM, I guess step forward Kaveh if Delfi isn't deemed ready yet.

        Thank you for the service.

Gucci was a great player. I will always remember his goal against southkorea in our 2014 quali campaign.

His timing is perfect. A lot of fans were doubting his presence in Team Melli lately, because of Kaveh Rezaei. But we are talking about Reza Ghochannejhad. He and Dejagah gave birth to the team we got now. Players like him are necessary to motivate. If he really would have changed our game against portugal? we will never know.

Surely his wife wrote that letter, because Reza is never ever capable of writing persian. So actually i would prefer to read something by himself.

I think he knows he will be hard pressed for play time when we have such a deep striker pool now (Sardar, Taremi, Karim, Kaveh, etc...).

I guess a good decision, but I'm not the biggest fan of the timing. Advantageous people like Karimi will ignore all logic and blame this on CQ.

At any rate, one of my fave Team Melli players of all time. I remember when people were not wanting him in the team because he played in 2nd division of Belgium and they all thought we had better "homegrown" strikers who should be playing. Now those same people will be saying how we have lost a great striker (Karimi, Mayeli Kohan, looking at you).

His South Korea goal will go down in history, and more importantly, his amazing positive personality and team spirit should be a lesson to everyone who joins Team Melli. Everything was about the team with Gucci, and I am sure he will be missed.

I'm sure we will all be following his club play next season, wish him a great year wherever he goes (maybe back to Qatar for a couple final years of big pay days - fully deserved).

Carlos does not need to explain his decision. Not every player on the roster plays in the WC. You have 23 players, which means at any given time, 12 will be on the bench. From one game to another, 90% of the roster will not change. Most coaches will make slight changes to the team from one game to another especially when you have won your first game. If we had lost to morocco, it may have been different, but we won.

This is not unique to TM and is followed by ALL of the teams in the WC.

Gucci and Dejagah were on the roster for the reason that if we had injuries, these 2 could be inserted into the game. Plain and simple.

This is exactly the same question I asked several days ago. If they were not fir, why did he take them? And if they were fit, why the heck did he not play at least Gucci in the last 20-30 minutes of the Portugal match?

I know he is 31 and everything. Still, I am really sad he retired and I feel this was yet another of CQ´s mistakes in this World Cup, not to give Gucci any playing time!

After all, it was his goal against S. Korea that made us qualify for the WC2014. I´ll never forget that goal and I will never forget how he ran his ass off in the last World Cup final round against Nigeria, Argentina and Bosnia.

Great player, we should all respect his choice

The reason he didnt play was due to the formation CQ stuck to as he saw fit in all games with the exact same players.

The analysis of the opponents and how carlos choses the players accordingly to each game is much different than what we think

One thing you guys should bare in mind these players have families and children and are away days and weeks at a time from their loved ones, they need to attend to their lives especially now he is at a age that he might not get called up again or get play time as there are plenty of younger players ready to fill his spot.

A brave and humble choice to open room for others, he scored many important goals for us snd made us all proud and happy,

he worked hard to make himself part of 2 world cup squads for Iran, which is very admirable

We wish he played in this world cup but unfortunately circumstances didnt allow that to happen

He also made us proud every time he played or scored his club games

Good like to you Mr.Ghouchannejad we never forget your goal against South korea and all of your brave and selfless performances for Iran

Thank you for your time Gucci, sad to see you go but with a new generation of strikets it was bound to happen.

My money is on Dejagah retiring next.

Its not a matter of players being fit, as all the players attending the world cup are fit and ready to fire(with the exception of Dejagah)

Its the matter of them being useful according to CQ’s analysis of the opponents and the tactic he sees fit to be implemented, CQ’s thinking is different than ours

                          Unbelievable..
And I agree, CQ should have given him some time at least against Portugal.

There is no "should of" here - the players that gave us the highest chance of winning were the ones who played.

The more I think, the more I don't like the timing. He is also indirectly insulting guys like Taremi and Karim who played in his spot. This announcement could have been made in a week or two.

I love Gucci forever, but to me it just seems as if he is leaving TM with a bitter taste in his mouth..and it didn't need to be so if he just waited it out another week or so. TM literally just arrived in Tehran yesterday.

Would be a killer now, if CQ for real doesn’t continue with TM....
