Queiroz yet to agree to Iran contract extension

Sports News - July 2, 2018 Michael Church

ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia (Reuters) - Carlos Queiroz has yet to agree to extend his stay as Iran coach despite claims by the president of the country’s football federation that the Portuguese would lead the team at January’s Asian Cup finals.

Iran Football Federation president Mehdi Taj was quoted following the team’s return to Tehran as saying Queiroz would remain at the helm following their elimination from the World Cup finals through to the continental championship in the United Arab Emirates.

But a source close to Queiroz denied an agreement has been reached between the two parties and that the former Real Madrid head coach is considering other options.

“There was a new approach from the IR Iran Football Federation, but the agreement is far from done due to the basic conditions that would be necessary for the federation to put in place towards the Asian Cup,” the source told Reuters.

“In the present scenario, Carlos Queiroz’s contract with IR Iran Federation finishes at the end of July.

“Apart from Iran, Carlos has other proposals and options that are open.”

Queiroz stated before the World Cup that he would end his seven-year stint as Iran coach upon the completion of the country’s involvement in Russia 2018.

The 65-year-old was appointed in April 2011 and steered the team to back-to-back qualifications for the World Cup for the first time in Iran’s history.

Their performance in Russia, where they defeated Morocco and drew with European champions Portugal only to miss narrowly out on a place in the second round, was the nation’s best in five appearances at the finals.

But his relationship with the national association has often been strained, with Queiroz voicing his intention to stand down from the role on a number of occasions.

The former Manchester United assistant coach is hugely popular in Iran with both fans and players, several of whom have called for him to be given the four-year contract through to Qatar 2022 that he desires.

“The contract will be discussed later but yes, Quieroz will remain in charge until the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019,” Taj was quoted as saying following the team’s return to Tehran.

“The (World Cup) results say that we are on the right track. The 7,000 fans who welcomed the team at 4am at the airport showed us their priority is the national team.

“We have had a good football year, and the Asian Cup is ahead of us. Based on my negotiations with Queiroz, and the current atmosphere, we can win the Asian Cup.”

        No, it is true.
I talked to one of my friends who works for Vezarate varzesh, he told me that CQ never agreed to a 6 month
        Deal from beginning.
He said that CQ feels demeaned and belliteled by being asked for a 6 month extension and not another
        4 year deal.
However he said that Taj and Saket have been very persistent to sign him and have promised him absolute
        Full coaporation.
However nothing had been signed and it’s yet to be determined.

4 years would be great. Just to finish what he has started and foster the next generation. After that whatever happens, happens.

Next world cup is the last opportunity for Iran to make the second round under the current format of the World Cup (and who knows what will happen when we get a 48 team world cup...)

CQ will not accept a deal that keeps him until the AC he said it all this time.....do not believe the garbage you hear about him accepting any such deal.

It would be stupid on his behalf not to coach us for AC even if he wants to leave, only 6 months away and could leave on a high with winning the whole thing.

Today Iran economically is regressing and many are extremely stressed both financially and physically so to have IFF allow CQ to leave will only be another nail in the regimes coffin. This will never happen. Just my two cents

AC is not big enough tournament for top class foreign coaches.

Maybe not but for a person that has coached a team for 7 years through so much austerity/politics and when he could cement his legacy as a coach to finally win the tournament we haven't won for over 30 years and officially make us the best team in Asia, I imagine it's pretty big for him.

                      Hey guys please pay attention
CQ has not yet agreed to nor signed any contract extension till end of AC.
Don’t be fooled by the Media or what Taj says , there is a good chance that he will be leaving TM.
He has requested either a 4 year deal or nothing at all.
However Taj,Saket and even Soltani are very much trying to keep him for Iran.

                          Hi sarbaz, how are you?
If possible, can you explain why is it that CQ feels extending his contract til the end of the Asian cup which is less than a year from now, so demeaning?

                            CQ has rejected Cameroon offer.

Algeria have just added another name to their candidates list.

So I guess Zemalek and Bafana Bafana are the two remaining who want CQ.

                              Irandoust aziz

He feels that after being in a Iran for 7 successful years , it is very low of IFF to offer him only a 6 months

Extension and not another 4 years based on his accomplishments.
