Here is a good interview with Gholampour about the first round of qualification. I would have loved to hear what he has to say about the second round of qualification.

از بازیهای مقدماتی جام جهانی 1994 بگویید؛ رقابت هایی که در ایران و سوریه برگزار کردید.

در این مسابقات من و عابدزاده دروازه بان های مورد نظر علی پروین برای تیم ملی بودیم. قبل از آن برای بازیهای آسیایی 1990 بود که علی آقا پروین از من و احمدرضا برای حضور در دروازه تیم ملی دعوت کرد. البته پیش از آن در دیدار دوستانه با لهستان اولین بازی ملی خود را انجام داده بودم.

روش علی پروین برای استفاده از دروازه بانها چگونه بود؟ آیا در تیم ملی هم مثل پرسپولیس از سیستم چرخشی استفاده می کرد؟

من در بازی اول مقابل عمان فیکس بازی کرده بودم ولی در بازی دوم از عابدزاده در ترکیب اصلی استفاده شد. البته نمی دانم قرار بود سیستم چرخشی درون دروازه استفاده شود یا خیر؟ در هر حال همیشه زحمت خود را در بازیها و تمرین می کشیدم با این امید که روزی به تیم ملی دعوت شویم. البته در آن روزها احمدرضا یکی از بهترین های آسیا بود

در آن روزها در رقابت های جام آزادگان و جام باشگاههای آسیا درخشیده بودید. آیا انتظار نداشتید جای عابدزاده را بگیرید؟

خیلی به این مسایل فکر نمی کردیم چون من و احمدرضا علاوه بر این که رقیب بودیم اما با هم رفاقت داشتیم. در بازیهای آسیایی 1990 هم حتی یک دقیقه بازی نکردم اما آنچه برایمان مهم بود برد تیم ملی بود. هر وقت هم به من بازی می رسید با جان و دل بازی می کردم. در مرحله اول مقدماتی جام جهانی هم ما دو نفر دروازه بانان تیم ملی بودیم که از بازی دوم و با مصدومیت عابدزاده من در تمام بازیها فیکس شدم.

از لحظه مصدومیت عابدزاده خاطره خاصی دارید؟ بازیکنها در آن لحظه چه عکس العملی نشان دادند؟

هنوز یک ربع هم از بازی نگذشته بود که احمدرضا برای دفع توپ از محوطه بیرون آمد اما زیر پایش خالی شد و رباط پایش پاره شد. در آن لحظه اصلا فکر نمی کردیم شدت مصدومیت زیاد باشد و در انتظار بازگشت او بودیم. ولی وقتی برانکارد وارد میدان شد متوجه شدیم احمدرضا دیگر به بازی نمی رسد و من بلند شدم تا خودم را گرم کنم.

فیکس شدن ناگهانی در بازی، استرس زا نبود؟

در آن روزها جوان بودیم و هر وقت فرصت می کردیم بازی کنیم، دوست داشتیم بهترین بازی خود را انجام دهیم.

برای بازی با سوریه می دانستید که فیکس هستید. تمرین خاصی انجام ندادید؟

آن روزها ناصر ابراهیمی و علی پروین علاوه بر کارهای تاکتیکی تیم، بیشتر سمت ما شوت می زدند. ابراهیمی با این که تخصص دروازه بانی نداشت به خوبی ما را تمرین داد و من با آمادگی وارد میدان سوریه شدیم. در آن مسابقه حریف صاحب یک پنالتی شد که ضربه پنالتی را دفع کردم. البته در برگشت توپ، آن ها سریع تر از مدافعان ما به توپ رسیدند و در بازگشت توپ را گل کردند. بازی یک بر یک شد و با این گل سوری ها چنان خوشحالی کردند که زننده گل مصدوم شد!

از مرحله برگشت بگویید. در این مرحله مسابقات در سوریه برگزار می شد و ایران هم با سوریه امتیاز مساوی داشت.

مرحله برگشت در سوریه برگزار شد و موفق شدیم عمان را با گل حمید درخشان شکست دهیم. عمان هم تیم خوبی بود که حشمت خان مهاجرانی به خوبی آن را آماده مسابقات کرده بود.

در روز آخر باید با سوریه مساوی می کردید. آیا بازی در سوریه درچنین شرایطی نگران تان نکرده بود؟

جو تیم خوب بود. تیم هم در اوج آمادگی به سر می برد و اصلا نگران صعود نبودیم در بازی با سوریه هم بیشتر توپ ها را مدافعان ما دفع کردند و کمتر اجازه دادند توپ به من برسند. در این نیمه خاکپور اخراج شد و ده نفره شدیم اما علی آقا در رختکن به ما گفت خوب دفاع کردید. در ادامه هم همین طور دفاع و حمله کنید. فکر می کنم بهترین بازی ملی من، همان مسابقه در سوریه بود. یادم می آید سوری ها با این که از نیمه اول با گل حمید درخشان عقب افتاده بودند، اما تا دقیقه 90 تیم خود را تشویق کردند و سرانجام در آخرین لحظات با یک پنالتی به گل تساوی دست یافتند که البته در صعود ما تاثیری نداشت.

They mean Morteza Kermani Moghaddam and Jamshid Shah Mohammadi.

Behzad Gholampour was out standing against Syria in both home and away games during the primaries which helped Iran get into the final stage for the first time post revolution.
He was however, our weakest player during all of our five games that we played in the final round.
The blame for him to be that weak is directly on the head coach Ali Parvin and the rest of his staff composed of Naser Ebrahimi, Amir Haj Rezaei, Mohammad Mayeli Cohan and Parviz Kamasi.
But at the end of the day and despite having so many talented players all around, we did not deserve to qualify for the 94 world cup because right from the beginning, the proper mind set to qualify for the finals was just not there.

These were the first TM games I remember. I was very young and the nostalgia is huge. I remember my dad was so happy when the Iraqi player was sent off after punching our player, and how I copied his reaction like a monkey lol.

Thankfully Iran started playing better in the next Asiancup otherwise I would develop a inferiority complex after watching such poor TM games.

Being abroad, I was following it by reading Iranian newspapers such as Kayhan, Ettelaat. Watching my local news channel and local World Soccer program on TV. The same was for me for 1990 Asian Games, 1992 Asia Cup and 1994 Asian Games.

1996 Asia Cup was the time of internet so I was reading about it on websites

2004 Asia Cup I followed live audio on PFDC since it was dialup connection back then.

God bless the internet and now it has become easier and better to watch live but still not 100% as occassional buffering can ruin for us viewers.

It is a head coach's responsibility to recognize his or hers players physical, mental and spiritual strengths and weaknesses.
The 3-0 loss of our first game against South Korea was the direct result of Gholompour's mistakes of his poor judgments on how to grab and control the ball on the first 2 goals which came from the crosses and the last one on not knowing how to close down the angle on the up coming striker with the ball.
So those three goals should have given the head coach Parvin the knowledge that his main goal keeper is not up to the task of guarding Iran's net with safety.
But he kept Gholampour in goal for all the remaining games, and Gholampour became responsible for allowing more bad goals which otherwise, another more prepared goal keeper would have stopped.

Sure Gholampour himself was at fault for being so weak as our number one goal keeper, and he got hammered for it by the fans and the media in the worst possible way upon his return to Iran.
But as the head coach, Ali Parvin is more responsible because it was his decision to put an unfit Gholompour in the net to begin with.

Prior to the games Gholampour was in good condition. Perhaps the pressure got to him.

I saw the clip you had posted. I don't get that impression at all. To me it seems like they refused simply because they saw the pressure the team was under and did not want to put themselves in that position knowing they wouldn't do any better.

I think when you have been honored to be called to the 23 man team to represent your country, you should be ready to handle all the pressure that would come your way. It is not like they were facing Ronaldo or Messi or Baggio/Romario of their time.
The fact was Gholampour conceded 3 outrageous goals in the game against South Korea (all due to his error) and the most bizzare goal in the match against Japan (although Iran won that match). The backup goalkeepers were then asked to go in goal against Iraq which they refused (they should have had confidence at that point as Iran had defeated the Asian champions (Japan).
It still frustrates me to this day to see how easily Ghoalmpour conceded goals in the final round of qualifiers.
