He has little defensive responsibility and a great connection with his fullback, very talented young norwegian svensson. Together they isolated and killed most opposition left backs. ARJ has the ability to cut inside and shoot, as well as play in great crosses, and maybe most impressively, play very accurate through balls to forwards. Murray doesnt really make those kind of runs that ARJ likes to play with such balls, but even regardless of that they dont have any chemistry for ARJ to really connnect with him on the pitch. On AZ, the main reason he was so effective was bc of his connection with first Vincent Janssen and then Wout Weghorst (now at Wolsburg). Playing arj 10 mins here and there and the odd start will not build the chemistry his game relies on to be effective.
He is not an attacking mid. He is a right winger. He is a classic right winger with added ability to cut inside and shoot. Please stop saying that he is an attacking mid. On our national team we were in need for a classic 10 for years and he was never once trusted to play there, even over an aging and injury prone dejagah. The guy is a right winger, that is his bread and butter. You bought him as a right winger, if he cant displace knocakert maybe you shouldnt have bought him then we all wouldnt have to be apart of this lame situation.
There is a trend for very quick wing-backs instead of wingers. Not at Brighton though.
It is arguable that the success of Salah came about because Klopp employed him as a second striker rather than as right winger?

CH: "Davy Propper will miss the game. He's probably be out for a period of weeks. "We have got some late decisions to make, Pascal, Stephens, Bong." #bhafc

Brighton have crappy midfielders and a small club mentality, and CH is just scared to do anything remotely controversial or attacking or proactive.
So their mids like propper and stephens dont have the legs or speed or mobility to cover the ground behind the wide players enough, and so the wide players have to play way further back. Thats part of the reason all of your wide players have always had low stats (still ARJ just has way more quality than those players).
But this all begs the question, if me and you can distinguish that this could be an issue, WHY ON EARTH did brighton pursue ARJ so hard, pay a record fee for him, and now wont field or him, or have people like you already suggesting he change his position? Something doesnt add up.
and in the long term, your proposed idea of him playing second striker doesnt make ANY sense, considering brightons best player is probably gross who is very effective there.
ARJ's position is RW. If you didnt want to play him there, then you really shouldnt have bought him.

Does anyone else think that Ghoddos might have been a better signing specifically for Brighton than Jahanbakhsh?
I'm actually surprised that Ghoddos didn't get more attention given the british media loved his performance against Arsenal in the Europa League, he doesn't need a visa/work permit etc, Graham Potter had quite a few contacts in the UK ... and whereas JB is only really a right-wing who can switch sides if needs be, Ghoddos can play effectively on either wing, attacking midfield, support striker and centre forward roles with seemingly equal effectiveness.

I think Ghoddos did a great job of identifying a team in a bigger league where no doubt he would be a starter. He will shine here and his next contact would be with a bigger team. I think JB is young enough that he would have been better served going to a league like Bundesliga or Seria A and would have been an undisputed day one starter.

Pascal Groß, attacking midfielder (rather than second striker) is doubtful vs Newcastle.
Brighton's problem away from home is getting players into the opposing penalty area. I think the answer is getting one of the "wingers" further forward into the channels.

4-3-3 would MUCH MORE suit this team in my opinion

I hope Bruno plays for Brighton as his overlaps help a lot. 4-3-3 can be played in a handful of ways but I like it with a midfielder that is above the average like a Milner, Pogba, David Silva or Doucouré, the four that have given us most trouble this season.
Houghton and Rafa are from the same era as managers and are well matched for style.

Originally posted by Perseus View Post4-3-3 is my favoured formation, but quite frankly, the current Albion team isn't good enough in midfield for it. Even Newcastle with Shelvey and Hayden would be a bit of a struggle, Diame not so much. Kenedy and Ritchie could expect to play wide for them in a 4-4-1-1.

Originally posted by scuderia View PostBrighton needs a better central midfielder, the two current ones (Stephens, Propper and Gross) are not strong enough! If anything I think Bissouma actually plays a better role there but he's still young and makes plenty of mistakes! Frankly I personally think that March needs to be replaced as well to play a 4-3-3.
Current:
Dale Stephens has not adapted to the Premier League as well as expected and has done better.
Davy Pröpper has lost possession too much in some games this season.
Yves Bissouma grabbed his chance better than Alireza Jahanbakhsh against Southampton in the League Cup
Pascal Groß covers a lot of ground, but sees his goal attempts saved. (not one of the central pair midfielders)
Beram Kayal can hold his own until it comes to goalscoring.
Sixth (for 4-3-3) midfielder: missing.
Dale Stephens is the best prospect, but falls short of top six competiveness through lack of speed and technical shortcomings, but most of all through lack of support of bodies in midfield. i.e. he would show better with a heavyweight partner in the middle, or drop a winger and have an extra body to make up the numbers.
I don't think CH is overly defensive compared to the other 13. Playing two wingers is not. Lack of numbers in the middle makes for longer passes. Passing and possosession ended up middle of the table last season.
