If he was a great referee as he wanted to be, he should have known that Pouladi already HAD A YELLOW card!!! How can he forget such a crucial thing in an International competition?!!!! Hes Stupid and he deserved all the crap he received! he should have been more aware and he wasnt and its like a pilot making an landing error and causing a crash and then complaining that people hated him??!! What a MORON!!

        Ben Williams on Iran

I never saw that match; however, if Pooladi did indeed delay the game by ignoring the referee's instructions to move on, there are serious problems not just with player attitude, but lack of timely intervention by leaders on the squad as well. When you defy the referee, you are far more likely to lose the game-that's just the way it is. Could someone verify if Pooladi acted that way?

Second, the referee records the information after issuing a yellow or red card; I assume he or she also reviews (or they're supposed to remember ) that information prior to issuing one. Why didn't he review his notebook before giving him a second yellow card? A simple warning to the player that a second yellow was on the way would have gotten the job done. (I have also seen referees engaging in conversations with team captains when communication breaks down. Why didn't he do that?)

In addition to being respectful on the pitch, players need to be smart and practical; referees need to be smart, pragmatic and creative. Giving a second yellow card and being unaware the player had already received one represents none of those qualities.

I just hope our beloved national team players have learned invaluable lessons from that experience.

By the way, I have a rather stupid question: How do you give "Thanks" on this site?

          Be Williams on Iran

The result of this match bothered me, and Ben Williams interview in which he entirely lay the blame on the Iranian player for the ensuing problems and controversies goaded me into checking out that incident on YouTube. It turns out that both Pooladi and Williams were at fault, even though Williams deserves more criticism for creating the mess. To begin with, Pooladi, having received a yellow card already, should have been more circumspect in his reaction to the referee's instructions. When you're on the verge of being thrown out, you don't take those kind of chances. Second, when your team is ahead, you should Play it smart, and you will most likely win the match that way. Why take a wild chance like that?

But Williams is ultimately responsible for the mayhem. A competent referee should have--and would have- known that the player had already been issued a yellow card, and the ref would have either given a strong warning or communicated with the team captain about the likelihood of a second one coming up. Even the commentators severely criticized him for his action. Ultimately, his multiple errors, along with Pooladi's recalcitrance, led to that unfortunate result.

He could've just shut his mouth and enjoy retirement but it seems to me that he's a masochist who likes to get abused. I just wish an Iranian fan would punch his face on that day. I still hope that it happens one day be omide khoda

He is stupid, the single fact that he still doesn't want admit he did a mistake on 2nd yellow say it all, i mean mistakes happen, it is part of the game and some time can be crucial and cruel, BUT he continues to think he did a right thing is frustrating.....

I too agree with the death threats being wrong but that’s where the sympathy ends.

By his own admission this guy has very little international experience. I mean compare Foghani with Olympic and WC experience with this guy??

He’s a self-believer and a compulsive lier when he claims his only mistake was the timing in showing a red card. No Mr. You should have recorded the player’s number however obscured, you spent enough time pleading with him yet didn’t take down his number, which is the rule and would have then realised that he was already booked which I turn may have not given him a second yellow. So what did you actually check to see if he had recived a first yellow. Oic you trusted the Iraqis word and when you rushed back you read the player’s number. What a nithead!

Pooladi did us harm to give this guy an excuse he was looking for but he was biased towards Iraqis fouls and blew his whistle every time an Iranian fouled. Overall he wasn’t good enough to ref this game. The only word of truth coming out of his frigging mouth is that this was an intense game. And we will have another one against them in January however by the time we play them we would have qualified for the next round.

well, maybe it's not misrepresentation and a hint that you should pick a different career.

Just after reading this, he seems so full of himself and his career. Unfortunately, this is very common among referees who join the profession in order to compensate for their other insecurities and bring that superiority complex to the field.

A second yellow was totally unnecessary in the game--so early-- and ultimately decisive on the outcome. No competent referee would issue a red in that situation and like others have mentioned he wouldn't have gave it if he knew Pouladi was already on a yellow. The fact that he didn't have the balls to retract the yellow in that situation is all telling, or realizing that Pouladi was already booked (this is something you HAVE to know in such a high-stakes match).

If you fuck up, the media has every right to chastize you. That's the consequences that come with being a referee, making sure you're prepared and bringing justice to the game.

How is it that the Iraqi players remembered Pouladi already had a yellow, but Williams didn't? Something doesn't add up here.

in AC 04 our player shoved a chinese player and we get red carded, 11 years later our player gets shoved and is given a second yellow? perfect example of AFC bribery. sickening

It is so crazy to think that a referee should stop carding someone because they have been carded earlier in the game. So taking a basketball analogy... referees of a game should remember how many fouls Lebron James has and make sure they don't charge him with a 6th foul so god forbid he would foul out from the game... give me a break..Pooladi deceived the ref and got the yellow deservedly. Those who threatened the ref on his facebook page and etc... are the real cowards. By the way Iran will not win the Asian Cup, MARK MY WORD.

Ben? it that you Ben? Did you set up an account here to defend yourself?

Just kidding. But in all seriousness i dont agree with your statement. Many a times a referee will issue a yellow card in a game to make a statement that he will not allow that rough tackling or time wasting to continue, etc. Surely if a referee forgot that a particular player he is trying to make an example of had a previous yellow then he would not issue a diasterous 2nd yellow. In this case the keeper had shoved him as well by laying hands on him.
