    Australia

Australia are the 2015 Asian Cup Champions and yet lost their first game. They didn't play well at all. They didn't play.
Do you think they are up to something?
Do you think they have played strategically? Like not really showing their true strength and game plans and also instil a false sense in their stronger opponents that they are probably disorganised and not up to scratch?
Even if they end up third - all they need is a good win against Palestine which is easily attainable - they will qualify and might face us.
They are a strong Asian side and can beat any team.
What are your thoughts on that?

I have heard that Germany had a similar Idea in the World Cup last year, but than things went a bit unexpected for them.

Yes I believe it is Australia's plan to face Iran in the round of 16. That way they can avoid Vietnam or Thailand.

They had a one week training camp. Their coach took this first round lightly.

And in contrast we are taking our first game as the most serious game.

If you saw Syria vs Palestine today you will know that nothing is easy here, maybe Thailand was easy against India but these Arab teams if they had 20% better finishing they would be damn hard opponents

                        true
The level rises or falls depending who you are playing against.

This thread could be merged with "Day 2".

However, Australia lost because they looked unprepared and didnt have a clue how to break through a condensed defense line. Credit to Jordan, they took advantage of their few opportunities very well. There was also an element of luck and the help of referee that made the final result stand. You cannot write Aussies off too quickly. They can still top the group and I think they will.

Losing in Asia Cup is nothing new for the Socceroos, in 2007 lost 3-1 to Iraq still managed to reach Quarter-Finals, in 2011 lost to Japan in the Final 1-0 and in 2015 lost to Korea 1-0 in the group stage then defeated them 2-1 in the Final.

Jordan played against Australia, just like Team Melli against Argentina in 2014 WC or against Spain in 2018 WC. If Palestine and Syria do not use the same game plan as Jordan then Australia will manage to grab wins or at worse points for draws.

The only comparable aspect of Jordan’s game to Iran could be to relinquish the majority of possession. Other than that, Iran’s attacks are, in the CQ era, well developed. When we attack with numbers, each player has their specific assignment. Good win for Jordan, but Jordan punched a rusty Australia in the gut at the right moment. Then, sat back and executed their infamous tactics.
