Originally posted by Saam View PostGuys I know Ben Williams really screwed us badly but I give him about 65 percent of the blame for our elimination and the team 35 percent. We know that as a team, things like a red card do not really mess with our composure under CQ. Under Branko in 2004 it was an issue because a) he was not as good of a tactician, and b) on top of a red card to sattar zare, we had already been screwed by AFC before the game with the suspension of some of our defenders (including Nosrati who was suspended for the remainder of the tournament).
With queiroz, we have gotten results twice against South Korea with 10 men. First was beating South Korea 1-0 when Shojaei was given a straight red card, and keep in mind that we went down to 10 when it was still 0-0. The second was holding South Korea to a 0-0 away with an experimental lineup and 10 men. While the latter did not have as much pressure attached to it, the former had all the pressure in the world as we actually needed to win that game to qualify for the World Cup, and we were at 10 men at 0-0.
Therefore, I think our players lost it a bit mentally after that second yellow to Pouladi but we really should have just kept our defensive shape and held the 1-0 till 90 minutes like we have in many occasions.
Now I am not saying this to criticize our team because that was 4 years ago and water under the bridge, and Ben Williams deserves the majority of the blame. However, I am bringing it up to say that no matter what happens in terms of disallowed goals or unfair red cards, I know that this time around, with the mentality developed by CQ, the depth and quality of our squad, and the resolve of our players, we will do fine despite any biased refereeing and it will have a minimal effect on our matches.

for those of you blaming haghighi for not saving any of the PKs, i know 4 years is a long time, but i remember at the end of ET he was injured, bad. an iraqi player kicked him as hard as he could in the shoulder, and al-ben waleed williams did not caution him at all. i would love to see any injured goalie try to save a PK after being worked for 75 minutes with a man down.SHOW TIME!

Yeah, I mean that was the worst part, the one that made you realize you're being screwed over. Iraqis did what Pouladi had done (and worse) on several occasions, especially Younis Mahmoud repeatedly, and the ref just refused to book any of them, despite having sent off Pouladi with the second yellow for his action.

he is a pretty decent keeper but he certainly had mare of a game that day..!! gave up not just 1 but 2 tokhmy near side goals during it and failed to save even 1 PK outa what 7-8? attempts...! in the process miss-judging the placement of nearly all of those freaking PK..? (including the one awarded to iraq during the regulation time..!)
the overall blame for that loss though falls squarely over that retarded Red card sent off by scandalous prick benny william..!!
if i had to pick on one of our players, it would certainly be Haj Safi who's played a responsible role for all 3 goals conceded during the regulation and nervously Skying the all important first PK...!Last edited by BacheLot; 01-16-2019, 07:14 AM.

In his post match comments, Queiroz had nothing but praise for the referee:
"Today, we saw three great teams. The third team was of the officials. The referee was fantastic. The referee has lot of experience. Some of the decisions were not easy. But he showed why he is a great referee," Queiroz said.
