Vietnam advancing ahead of Jordan helps me realize a few things:
1) Vietnam is a pretty decent team for AFC standards. We shouldn't underestimate our 2-0 win against them. We dominated them in the first half. Iraq also beat Vietnam thanks to a fortuitous 90th+ minute goal. That game probably should've been a draw. And today, Vietnam disqualifies a very good Jordan team that beat Australia and many had pegged at possibly upsetting Japan/KSA in the QF. Vietnam is a solid team for AFC standards. Really happy with TM's performance against them, especially in hindsight. Our first half performance against them was some of the cleanest football I've seen TM play in a while.
2) As CQ says, never, ever, under-estimate your opponents. I know some people in Iran think it's Iran's God-given right to win every football match by 6+ goals (i.e., we are superior, we always were), but in modern football, most nations are pretty similar in terms of talent and potential outcome. That's why we must approach every match like it could be our last. I am sure CQ is ensuring we don't underestimate Oman either.
3) So glad CQ didn't play our A-team vs Iraq. As Tehranto jan said, Jordan played their A-team in a meaningless match vs Palestine and that may have come back to bite them since their players were more fatigued and the Vietnam match went on for 120+ minutes. Especially considering our RO16 match was only 3 days after our last match vs Iraq, it was essential that CQ gave our main starters a rest in a largely meaningless match (revenge narrative aside). Ramin, PAG, Ehsan, Ashkan, Taremi, and Torabi will all be rested and ready to go. Another good decision by CQ.
