Tactically, Semak is rather one dimensional and predictable .... he does get the most out of the hand he is dealt though and his substitutions are often sensible and timely and he looks to be admired by vast majority of his squad which are his pluses..! he will suffice for Zenit's domestic ambitions but if club inspire more European success, they probably should look to upgrade from him..!

I mean they had big managers like Mancini, Lucescu who are internationally recognized, successful in europe. They spent a lot of money as well and zenit were actually much worse then than now. Semak shortcoming imo isnt necessarily his tactical setup, which I think is usually solid especially considering shortcomings of the squad. IMO, his issue is more experience related. He is still not a top operator in big european games to affect changes during the matches. I think back to the fact they were beating lyon away from home after 45, drawing leizig away after 45, drawing benfica away after 45 mins. So basically in these three matches they were halfway to the point/points that would have secured qualification to next round and they failed 3 separate times, after semak had a halftime to rearrange tactics and change stuff up. IMO, he was too reactive and waiting almost for zenit to start fucking up before changing things. However, this was his first ever European outing as a coach, so hopefully he learns from it.

his winning goal in the friendly match vs CSKA today, ended 3-2 zenit. Great finish.

this was the team they started match with. I think it will be their starting lineup moving forward. It is really quite strong on the wings with malcom, driussi, who are high level young wingers in europe, and of course up front Dzyuba Azmoun one two punch is strong. Defense is very solid, karavayev was a great addition this year. Still the glaring hole is in midfield, while barrios is one of the up and coming defensive midfielders and Ozdoev is quite gardankoloft, a technical CM will eventually have to be inserted there.

For sure we will see some good football from them in second half of the season, shame its only going to be in league.

his highlights package from the match. Had two pre assists for both dzyuba's goals, his own great goal, and in general looks very sharp and fast.

He is sitting on 11 goals and 6 assists so far this season, with just league to focus on I think he could definitely hit 20 goal mark, 10 assists mark. Last season he ended with 17 goals and 7 assists, so another season of similar/better numbers will surely be enough to garner concrete offers from some quality teams in top leagues.

Slowly it becomes more and more evident that it was a bad decision to join Zenit considering he had an offer from Lazio a couple of months prior.
Wheras Zenit finished last in its CL group in a very lenient group Lazio competes for the Scudetto this season and will for the very least qualify for next season's CL. Tell me which is better? Obviously the latter. Being at least in contention to win the Italian League tops winning the Russian League by far. Nobody can deny that. Once again bad decision making from one of our players.

Not sure which Zenit/Sardar you've been watching, but he has contributed to this team's rise, he is a respected and needed part of the team, and importantly: He is happy and getting good training for his TM games. He can certainly look for other opportunities in the future, but his time at Zenit has NOT been a bad decision in any sense of the word.

He should have been contribuing for Lazio's quest to win a Scudetto after 20 years. A guy like Felipe Caicedo is doing that instead of him. He could have been easily part of Lazio's starting line up. The reputation of the Russian League is simply not comparable to that of the Serie A. Period.

well he didnt have an offer from lazio at the time he joined. In fact his reputation was quite low after a quiet WC (mainly due to system) and poor form in the league the year of the WC as well. Zenit helped him rediscover his form and become a sought after target again.

And lazio by no means are that strong either. While they are having a good run in the league they almost always peter out in the end. In the Europa League they couldnt even advance in a group with Rennes, CFR Cluj of Romania, and Celtic...finishing 3rd with 6 points, a full six points behind cluj in second and 7 behind celtic in first...

Zenit had an ok CL campaign where they were competitive, beating benfica and lyon comfortably at home, tying lyon away, and playing some close games with a highly superior leipzig who are top of the bundesliga...At the very end they were undone with absence of multiple key players in final match vs benfica, and even then still finished just one single point of qualification to the next round.

Not to say he should stay at zenit, but it certainly hasnt been a failure by any means, and he has developed in all facets of his game and attitude.

Lazio and Serie A in general is not exactly an ideal place for him to land anyways in terms of player development. He would be far more suited to bundesliga.

The team will now return to Saint Petersburg (from Spain) where they can rest and recover for four days. After the short break they then fly out to Belek in Turkey on Valentines Day for the next camp.
