Current Glentoran coach and former member of TM coaching staff, Mich McDermott shares his memories of WC 2018:

"Mick McDermott recalls 'wee man and Ronaldo' meeting at 2018 World Cup

Glentoran boss flicks through seven memorable photographs from his coaching career

Even now Glentoran boss Mick McDermott has to pinch himself when he reflects on going toe-to-toe with Cristiano Ronaldo at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Two years ago McDermott was a key member of former Iran manager Carlos Queiroz’s backroom staff preparing to step onto football’s grandest stage.

And the rank outsiders went agonisingly close to making history by almost pipping Portugal to a last-16 berth at the global tournament.

A 1-1 draw in Saransk saw Ronaldo and company sneak through at the expense of an Iranian side who had beaten Morocco 1-0 and lost narrowly to Spain earlier in the pool.

“Cristiano Ronaldo and a wee man from Belfast - I’m sure he was wondering who I was,” joked McDermott flicking through photographs of his Russian adventure.

“That game against Portugal had everything - goals, VAR, a saved penalty and a chance to win it with virtually the last kick of the game.

“Portugal were fighting to go through and so were we. We equalised with a late penalty and might have won it at the death but it wasn’t to be.”

McDermott can still see Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi’s gilt-edged chance deep into added time, his close range shot rippling the side netting from seven yards out.

“A chance to make history gone,” he sighed. “When Ronaldo walked past me at the end, I don’t think he was too happy with their performance, but we were out.”

McDermott admits he “gasped” when Iran were drawn with Portugal, Spain and Morocco who had won the African Nations Cup just five months before.

“People talk about the group of death and it doesn’t get much worse,” he said.

“We knew we’d be in for a rough time but Carlos reassured us that in every battle there’d be ways of getting victories. And he was right.”

A memorable 1-0 win over the Moroccans was backed up by a gutsy display against Spain who needed a fortunate goal to scramble a 1-0 win in Kazan.

“We knew it would be a high tempo, possession type game against Spain,” he said.

“In football you can control the man, ball or space. We knew it would be tough controlling the man and ball against Spain, so we knew we’d have to control the space.

“We actually had chances but ended up losing to a ricochet off Diego Costa.

“It was frustrating, but to see our players compete against superstars from Barcelona and Real Madrid was massive for us. We lost the game, but won a lot of hearts.”

Defeat to Spain left Iran needing a win over Portugal to progress to the knockout stages for the first time in their history.

“We had 80 million people in Iran praying for us to get a result and it was a chance to make history,” he said.

“We believed we could get the result we needed, but it just wasn’t to be.”"

He is physically a tank, but besides that offers little. Essentially he is a technically a crappy version of ezatolahi, with much less game reading ability on defensive end too.
What looks great about mojadami is his technical proficiency, speed in getting around the middle of the field, and naturally good defensive game. His mobility fits exactly the profile we need in TM, somebody who can cover a ton of ground, but be able to move well with the ball and keep possession proficiently.
Asadi started to get better in the recent months for Tractor. The problem was the previous coach kept playing him as a centre back rather than in midfield.

He scored a couple of crucial goals for them which managed to keep them up in the top 4 and he got a few man of the match performances. He's a very strong player who with the right coaching and players around him can improve a lot. He's the same age as Mojadami.

Reza Asadi is definitely not one to sleep on, same goes got Omid Noorafkan, who's done well since moving to Sepahan.

No he's way better than Cheshmi imo. He's not immobile. He's got a fair bit of pace.

Afshin Peyrovani talks about CQ! Is this a sour loser talk or do you think he's for real?

                  Salty.

As Iranians we have a very strong reaction to being told we were wrong about something.

The pure saltiness from the anti-CQ crowd cant be overstated. Khiabani, MayeliKohan etc etc all had their usual manic rants and tantrums over CQ but didnt dare utter a word against Wilmots and his strategies or lack thereof, because they knew that would be admitting fault.

He admits in the interview that his first priority and devotion is Perspolis. not Team Melli. That is why he did not speak against Branko regardless if he is the culprit . People like him is why football problems will never be solved in Iran and have regressed so much since the revolution.

I used to think Peyrovani was one of the good ones in our football. As soon as he said Persepolis over team melli...

He's down there with the likes of Ali Karimi post retirement, Ghalenoei etc.

What the hell is all the fascination with Perspolis? I don't understand how people in Iran have such tunnel vision that they act like being a fan of Perspolis or any other PGL team is absolute and above everything else. No one around the wold gives a rat's ass to our crappy league.

I guess people in Iran in general and fans of PP don't have the view of the outside world to realize our league and club are really crappy. Even our national team is seen as a minor player in the international stage. Maybe TV coverage made them think we really count as they invite the like of Figo and ask them questions about us.

However they should realize the real level of our league as Iran TV shows ton of CL and top4 euro leagues games.

To defend them, sometimes it is hard to place NT above your club no matter their level. In their everyday life, PP fans live with SS fans, they exchange jokes and such everyday, national TV speak about both clubs everyday.. they don't live with mexicans, europeans to receive jokes on how's bad iran is.

While I am not one who prioritizes club over national team, its very common against ultra fans all around the world.

We are fortunate (and unfortunate) to be probably the only Asian country with an organic football culture and history.

Well for some Iranians, the Perspolis-Esteghlal rivalry is a place to empty their "oghdehs" from the lives they live in Iran. It is legal and less chance for repercussion than if they said similar things in the street.

They don't have to care about other people caring about Iran's football. No one abroad cares about many leagues in the world but the fans of thr country obviously do.

We could be the opposite by paying washed up stars to attend like in QSL or Saudi/UAE leagues. Fans show up one game to see a star and then the stadium is empty the rest of the year.

I say this as someone who puts Team Melli over Persepolis and someone who was very critical of Persepolis during the CQ-Branko row
