Who was the most damaging coach for Team Melli?

GN got a bad rep from 2007 AC because of the 2006 world cup fallout, team fracturing, and then the federation (being run by the olagh mullahs) got suspended for political interference right before the Asian cup and the government officials said "Who is FIFA to tell us how we run our country?". That stuff wasn't GN's fault but gets attributed to him.
Branko was the worst because he could only start the same XI with zero backup plan in case things went south. Comparing him to CQ is a desperate attempt by the PGL mafia because to my recollection, this guy couldn't even beat Angola and lost to a dire China with the greatest midfield Iran has ever had.

Also it's shameful that people could vote for CQ in this poll. Despite his occasional petulance (sometimes understandable as the IFF has been made up of a revolving door of inept jokers for some time) and false dawn of a 2nd tenure (which should have started much earlier or not at all)... He's the highest quality coach we've had in my lifetime. Some of the bums we've had before and since aren't fit to have their names uttered in the same sentence, let alone ranked above him by way of those votes.

He won the player of the year award although for some really weird reason they didn't announce it as a prize award for (the only) two consecutive seasons, still don't know why...
He was branko's favourite player, aged 22, until they fell out over the dynamo move and he was blacklisted. Mobali. It really impacted his career trajectory. When I saw him play those first few seasons i thought he was possibly the most complete footballer Iran have ever made but it took him almost a decade to recover after the Branko effect . He was never the same player as his age 22-23 period

We should've been at the 2010 WC. The Saudi and NK team were shit. We should've atleast got the 3rd place spot

whoever thinks losing to saudi at home (watched by only saudi and iranian fans) is more embrassing than losing a world cup game against england by 6 goals watched Internationally, NEEDS to get their head checked out.
Ali daei wasn't great but he was deffo NOT the most damaging coach for Team Melli.

The question IMO is maybe not formulated correctly somehow. I mean damaging sounds too harsh but anyway I would select Branko. He had by far the most talented team Iran ever had with lot of players in their prime time, but h only managed 3 places in AC 2004 when we had a golden opportunity to at least go to the final. And please dont come with bad luck with referee and penalties and so on. We should have demolished the China team before we ended up in that situation. Also in WC 2006, we could have done much better vs both Mexico and Angola. If there were issues in the team with Daei, Karimi and whoever, it was his damn duty to make sure those issues be resolved, either to have balls like CQ to exclude trouble player or solve it. I will never ever forgive Branko for WC2006. It was one of the most disappointing performances having a team with so many expectations and hope.

When we lost against Kuwait 3-0 just two months after the world cup (with Karimi, Mahdavikia, Azizi, Daei etc..) it was clear that without a good goalkeeper and solid defence this wasn't a great team : https://www.teammelli.com/matchdata/...ls.php?id=2190
After he fully took over we didn't lose for a huge number of games, with standouts being the Denmark, Japan games. the only loss after his first camp was against Mexico in Oakland, at a time when Azizi was chasing chubby short girls and the team was a little fractured. I genuinely think that if he had not been influenced so much my PP and EsEs hierarchy he could have built a much better unit long-term than Talebi.

Losing to Saudi at home virtually got us booted from making the WC in 2010. We made the 2022 WC. Obviously losing a key game to a major regional rival at home in front of 100k home supporters is way worse than the 6-2 loss no one really cares about anymore
We were gonna lose to England regardless, we had a chance to make it to the next round despite that and came within a razor thin margin
