We had 11 pts fourth place. Saudi third place with 12 pts. if we got a draw against Saudi they would have came away with 10 pts in fourth and us with 12 pts in third. Third place we would ATLEAST have had playoffs against Bahrain and then beat New Zealand. Playoffs would have been less embarrassing than automatic disqualification

No it did not .The South Korea and North Korea games in the World Cup 2010 qualifiers were pivotal moments for us and the outcomes had a significant impact on our chances (not just Saudi). Draw against North korea and South korea (Last game) caused us to miss world cup. Any win in those 2 games and we would've been thro (directly ) by 13 poinst as 2nd team in our group.

Losing to saudi arabia 2-1 in azadi Was bad but no where near the embrassing loss against England in WORLD cup witnessed by billions.

I still believe to this day that If Daei was kept in charge the outcomes against North Korea and South Korea could have been different. We would've beaten North korea and draw against South Korea .

The cycle of not learning from past mistakes continues... Funny thing is that we never learn from it and we keep getting punished for it. Everytime we change a coach before important Game/Tournament we always fail.

I'm sure people remember that the biggest rival in 2022 world cup six weeks into Mahsa Amini murder and the Iran protests wasn't England/USA, wasn't the other players in the team that they were having arguments with, but was the internal conflict and anxiety within the players themselves - both their own feelings and knowing how they were being viewed by many Iranians in Iran on the eve of an international tournament. The biggest challenge was their own psychological state and emotions

The world cup was gone before even the first ball was kicked, what was surreal is that a team which is so fractured and players who are so internally conflicted and confused about what to say or do somehow managed to return home without getting battered in all three games

I agree, honestly how they didn’t concede 10+ goals versus England and managed to bounce back and beat wales is honestly mind blowing, especially with Beiro getting injured. I do however think that CQ got his tactics wrong against the US regardless. But overall the games were lost before it even started. All the fans booing the players, how can anyone perform for their international team while being hated by their own “fans”.

It was a miracle - I honestly was not expecting anything other than three big defeats. It wasn't just the people that were against them, the players themselves were feeling such internal conflict, you could see in their faces how confused and anxious they were

After years/decades of looking forward to this specific match and so looking forward to this world cup, many hardcore TM fans like myself were upset and I didn't want TM to play in the end. I saw the tournament being hijacked by IR and seeing seyedoona and his acolytes wandering about the stadiums abusing anyone wearing zan zendegi azadi (https://twitter.com/MehdiRizvi123/st...26694594596865). That world cup was over for me before it started because kicking a ball I felt was shadowed by the events happening in Iran - I don't think "oh we will win and the nation will be happy" could work this time, maybe in 1998 with smiling khatami coming along but not this time.

The only criticism I could have about Queiroz was that after so long in Iran he didn't empathise with the majority of Iranians inside the country who were so upset about what was happening. In terms of football, it is an absolute dreamworld to believe that any other coach could have brought us 3 points.

Stop making Turkey Excuses ! A win against either korea and it was a direct ticket to world cup ! No Ifs and Not buts! We had 3 games after saudi - Thats 9 points!!!!! DPR Korea , UAE , South Korea. A win against DPR would've done the job. we're not talking about Japan here we're talking about same weak as North Korea that conceded 7 goals against Portugal.

Again I still beleive it was a mistake to change Ali daei at that time. Afshin ghotbi didn't do shit . Same as what we experienced in 2022 WC. We changed the coach and we saw what happened.

It was impossible for that to happen though. And also 2018 (4pts and a shot on target away from winning the group) and 2022 (3pts with a sudden death winnable game against USA) were the closest we've come to qualifying from a WC group. All to play for going into the last game.

I know we also had 3pts in 1998 but we were never gonna beat Germany in the final game and even a draw would have seen us eliminated.

The point in 2014 wasn't as bad as 2006 given the difference in the quality of squads. 2006 and 1998 were our best two squads. 2014 was unquestionably our worst.

There's a major difference between LOSING TO SAUDI at home and tying North Korea in Pyongyang at a hostile environment. Losing to Saudi at home is unacceptable and unprecedented. A draw away against NK is acceptable

1. Draw against UAE AWAY = 1 pt
2. Draw against South Korea HOME = 1 pt
3. Draw against NK AWAY = 1 pt
4. Beat UAE at HOME = 3 pt
5. Draw against Saudi AWAY = 1 pt

All relatively acceptable results except for drawing UAE away and losing to Saudi at home. If we atleast staved off the Saudi defeat and drew we would have gotten the playoff spot which again is way better than losing to England. Daei failed and should have been sacked after the Saudi game. In fact he should never have been hired in the first place

Yeah one of my friends went to the game versus the US and she said the vibe of the Iranian fans section was so odd. Full of hezbollahis / people wearing hijab, arguments amongst Iranians. It was all just tension. And I agree the players looked so lost and confused. Other teams had to jsut deal with the stress of the World Cup game lol we had a million other issues going on way before the game was even considered
