Antwerp's fourth acquisition has finally arrived: goalkeeper Beiranvand lands in Zaventem
He finally got there. Alireza Beiranvand (27), the goalkeeper of Persepolis FC and the Iranian national team, has landed in Belgium, ready to finalize his transfer to Antwerp.

What a soap, especially for the press and public in Iran. Beiranvand already reached an agreement with Antwerp for three years in January (with option) and would come across during the international break in March for his medical tests and signature. But then came the corona crisis and he was stuck in Iran, one of the hardest hit countries. Even when the competitions stopped, he never got to our country. He was always stopped by the authorities and embassy because the borders of Europe were closed to non-EU citizens. Unlike, for example, the Iranian players from Charleroi, who could travel to Belgium because they already stayed here, he was unable to present a valid visa. In the meantime, Beiranvand continued to train at Persepolis and on June 29 he even played a league game, but from July 1 it was clear that he would no longer take action. Last week he finally got the green light for his departure and so he flew today - early Monday morning - from Tehran to Qatari Doha, and from there to Zaventem, where he arrived around 2 p.m.
Beiranvand is unlucky that Jean Butez (25) has already signed with Antwerp and is now well established. But if he passes his medical tests and his arrival is officialized, he can become a fierce competitor for the French goalkeeper. Beiranvand was twice champion with Persepolis and has been Iran's number one for several years - including at the 2018 World Cup, where he stopped a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo. His ex- (bond) coach Marc Wilmots says he tipped him at Luciano D'Onofrio and praised him in our newspaper. He called him in the same breath with Thibaut Courtois and Simon Mignolet. That is perhaps a bit premature, especially because he has to get adjusted first. And the fact that he can barely speak English will make his adjustment more difficult. But the 1 meter 94 large Beiranvand will impress anyway,
