This game was a great example just HOW important Mehdi is to the team.

It’s unfortunate how emotions got the best of him, cuz I am willing to have bet money he would’ve had an assist or goal today. His selflessness and hardwork on the pitch are truly admirable.

I disagree with this narrative that his emotions got the best of him.

We blow it out of proportion because it's an Iranian player but what he did happens multiple times in every game without punishment because it is not an action that referees should be punishing unless it is a clear and deliberate waste of time at the end of a game.

The ref messed up that call royally and Mehdi has to pay for it unfortunately, but to pin the blame on him being emotional or anything like that is in my opinion missing the truth.

Yeah, I don't think he is going to do that again but watching the game it seemed pretty clear he was trying to take a chip at the goal rather than frustration.
Regardless I think he has been immensely impressive mentally to get to where he is at and so I think calling him emotional is not a fair criticism.

Lets hope he has a good game next time and makes a competitive tie.

Now look me in the eye and say mehdi's absence did not affect their deffense and attacking ability ! Both Mehdi and oliveira are key players. This chelsea team is totally breakable and i'm sure they can get 2 goals back. I was hoping for a 1-1 draw or atleast 1-0 but 2 goals is not out of hand.

Hopefully mehdi can pull hat trick .

I didn't get to watch the match due to work, but the sports writers are basically saying that Porto wasted the opportunities and were unlucky not to score, while Chelsea capitalized on their chance. It was also clear that missing their top two scorers was a huge loss for Porto. Second leg should be much better for Porto, but unclear if it will be enough to make it out of this round. Having said that, they took out Juve, so nothing is impossible!

Dude randomly played his balls off. His drives from the RB slot looked more like prime hazard than manafa.



Corona mistake was pathetic and amatuerish.

Overall Porto played even better than I thought they would (they actually were almost same possession stats, more chances created) but lacked the killer edge of taremi+Sergio. Then the mistakes of zaidu and corona individually lost them the game.

Nope, I was not mistaking. My comment on him was general. He might be good in defence but his offence is NOT good. IMO, Zaidu is much better offensively.

Gusy, for the first time, I enjoyed listening to the Swedish Commentators since they kept saying how much Porto were missing both SO and Tarmi but mostly Taremi.

What do do you guys think, will Porto have any chance?

^ Porto definitely has a chance. I think if they can score first they can easily screw up Chelsea’s tactical plans. Scoring first and early in the match is what Porto needs in my opinion. But anything can happen.

'Nothing is impossible' for Porto in Champions League despite Chelsea lead

Porto are not yet giving up hope of reaching the Champions League semi-finals despite a frustrating 2-0 first-leg defeat to Chelsea in the last eight.

In their designated home leg, although both matches are being played in Seville, Porto enjoyed much the better of the first half, having eight shots to Chelsea's one and a superior expected goals (xG) total of 0.86.

However, the Premier League side – who had a half-time xG of just 0.05 - scored with that sole attempt through Mason Mount.

That lead was extended in the closing stages by Ben Chilwell, meaning Porto must now win by two goals in the second leg to maintain their European hopes.

While Wednesday's defeat was tough to take, Porto have already delivered an unlikely second-leg result in their run to the quarters, advancing against Juventus on away goals after extra time despite playing more than an hour with 10 men.

And midfielder Marko Grujic told Eleven Sports: "It is difficult to accept this result because we had eight shots in the first half to their one.

"We showed that we have quality and in the second leg will try to turn the tie.

"Porto have shown in the Champions League that anything is possible. With great spirit and preparation, nothing is impossible."

Grujic made three tackles and won all five of his aerial duels in a battling display typical of this Porto side.

Indeed, as well as outshooting Chelsea 12-6 across the 90 minutes, Porto won 62.4 per cent of the sides' duels while conceding six fewer fouls.

Sergio Conceicao felt Chelsea's experience told and bemoaned the nature of the goals Porto conceded, Chilwell's coming following a Jesus Corona mistake - the first error leading to a goal his side have made in the competition this season.

But the coach could not question Porto's spirit.

"I believe we played a good game," he told a news conference. "The projections for the second leg don't change, they are the same ones we had before the first leg.

"But there were two individual mistakes that caused two goals of the opponent. We deserved more than the result we've got. We didn't deserve to be losing 2-0 at half-time of this tie.

"We are at half-time. And we will fight until the last minute of the next 90 minutes to try to turn this tie around.

"We know it's going to be difficult, we know this is the Champions League and we are a club that doesn't belong to the big five [leagues].

"Also, we don't have the same capacity of Chelsea when it comes to their experience and individual talents. We can't forget that Chelsea brought off the bench [Christian] Pulisic, [Olivier] Giroud, [N'Golo] Kante, Thiago Silva...

"And we brought in the boys and left some other youngsters on the bench.

"It doesn't mean they don't have quality, they do have quality. And playing games like tonight's, they get more experience which is crucial at this level where a small mistake is punished by your opponents."
