This may have to do with the opponent as well. We all know the bad blood that has existed between Porto and Sporting. SC may not want to take the foot off the gas pedal against them, even though this is a cup rather than a league match. If Porto can take a nice lead in the first half (two or more goal margin), then perhaps Mehdi can sub off early for some much-deserved rest.
