This is the new format that came into play in world cup 2014.
Before that it had different formats

WC 2010 pot2 had asian + North America & Oceania teams

so all 4 asian teams were in pot 2

Both japan and sk had easier teams and made it to next round.

The algorithm actually changed at that point and Iran dropped to 47th immediately after, in 2006

So it's even more impressive that Iran is approaching top 20 now

win against South korea is must if we want to avoid any group of deaths. Even a draw would add negative points on our ranking
