Iran vs Uruguay 2003 - Carlsberg Cup

"This is a totalitarian system whose presence people feel in their blood and in their flesh on a daily basis. And it’s one that does not grant freedoms of any kind, or accommodate people’s demands in any way. What is increasingly clear is that there is clear demand for change in the regime. What the people want is regime change, and no return to the past. There is a very real possibility of regime change." - Nasrin Sotoudeh

This was our warmup before the World Cup 2002 qualifiers.
It really predicted how our TM would function during that phase - incredible attack, error prone defense.

That turn of the century side was our most talented generation ever I think.

Nikbakht was an animal physically. Strong as a horse, rapid, great offensive instinct and decision making. And he was so young then, one of a few enormous talents like Khaziravi, Nekounam, and ofc AK8 - all under 21.

Then you had star guys with more EU experience like Mahdavikia, Daei, Hashemian, Azizi, Bagheri, Rahman Rezaei, Minavand.

Plus a very solid group of others like Dinmohammadi, Golmohammadi, etc.

Biggest waste of talent ever to not see this amazing mesh of young talent, players in prime + with great EU + previous WC experience in 02 WC. Just watching games from this era and comparing to now you can see the difference in fundamental level of most of the players. Their ability to keep possession under pressure, change the point of attack, play great combos in offensive third is night and day compared to now.

Of the current guys only Taremi and Azmoun are on this level. From previous sides in past 10-12 years Dejagah may be the only one.

I loved the 2002 side, and they were our best hope at doing well in a WC, since they were the classic “play to the level of the opponent” side. Everyone talks about the 3-1 loss against Bahrain, but in those qualifiers we also drew 0-0 with Thailand and were completely outplayed. Blazevic was an amazing coach - he had just finished third with Croatia at the World Cup, but he consistently underestimated Asian opponents, particularly away from home (he would play far too offensive). We were also lucky to draw Saudi 2-2 away from home.

You’re forgetting Ando - no shot in hell was dejagah ever even close to Ando’s level of impact in TM. Without him we would have never gotten through to 2014 WC.

Iran - New Zealand 2003. Another outstanding performamce by AK8. Plus a (we thought) 18 year old Kaebi

Who remembers this one, shortly before the 2006 WC? Deserved to win against a good croatian side, few days later we would trash Bosnia 5:2. Had such high hopes for that WC

Iran vs. Croatia. Unfair penalty at the end for Croatia.

Iran vs Korea in Azadi, 1-1. Nekounam's free kick was an absolute masterpiece. One of the best FK goals in TM history. We don't see any like these anymore.
