I see this has turned into the heartbreak thread.
We had so many chances to qualify for WC 2010 with a mostly poor TM but had no luck at all. South Korea scored a late goal in each leg to stop us from winning. We tied UAE and North Korea... losing to Saudi after AN tried to visit TM during half time in the locker room and Daei was fired immediately after the game...
That was a very depressing qualification tournament too.

Neku had an exact same FK at Osasuna as well. He was so amazing

What made it better at least is that world cup sucked lol

NK qualifying instead of us was actually the worst feeling. I remember feeling gutted after the NK-Saudi game, where they basically played out a 0-0 draw. It was nice Saudi tied Bahrain in the playoff and then Bahrain lost to New Zealand tho lmaooo

Loool, I remember feeling so embarrassed back in the day, seeing TM with their copied Adidas designs. In 2006 our Iranoil Jerseys were Nike copies, while their tracksuits had 3 stripes.

Rahmati was the reason we didn't win that game. Had he used his fists to save that freekick, the South Korean player would have never come close to scoring on that a rebound. I don't know why Rahmati would always repeat that mistake. Often, when he would get scored on, he would put on that annoyed face and his body language would say: "It's not my fault". If it wasn't for his arrogance, he could have been one of the greatest goalies Iran has ever produced. Unfortunately he decided to be a gav-mish.

I agree, it is so shocking. Almost as bad is Mirzapour's dive to try to save it . I think he is the worst starting goalie we ever had

Also slapping his own teammate during a game. No doubt that he was skilled, but the guy had a horrible attitude

Ando and Gucci carried us into the 2014 WC. Gucci should never be forgotten, the way he left the national team was sad, but we owe that WC qualification to these two.

Agreed. Both games against South Korea he messed up on the free kick clearances. Played it right back into a dangerous spot instead of swatting to the side.

I had completely forgotten Korea's goal in this game was not from a free kick! I had also forgotten how frustratingly bad SHojaei was at finishing anything.
Ghotbi also was very bad at managing South Korea despite working with them for years.

                          THANKS FOR THE DEPRESSION.

Nikbakht was an animal physically. Strong as a horse, rapid, great offensive instinct and decision making. And he was so young then, one of a few enormous talents like Khaziravi, Nekounam, and ofc AK8 - all under 21.
Then you had star guys with more EU experience like Mahdavikia, Daei, Hashemian, Azizi, Bagheri, Rahman Rezaei, Minavand.
Plus a very solid group of others like Dinmohammadi, Golmohammadi, etc.
Biggest waste of talent ever to not see this amazing mesh of young talent, players in prime + with great EU + previous WC experience in 02 WC. Just watching games from this era and comparing to now you can see the difference in fundamental level of most of the players. Their ability to keep possession under pressure, change the point of attack, play great combos in offensive third is night and day compared to now.
Of the current guys only Taremi and Azmoun are on this level. From previous sides in past 10-12 years Dejagah may be the only one.
Don't forget Hamed Kavianpour - Newcastle were at one time linked with him. He had much more of a buzz around him than even Javad Nekounaum did. But Javad was finally favoured by Miroslav Blažević. I think that hurt his confidence and his growth.

What a great team this was! We literally had no weakness outside the keeper - and Mirzapour was a good shot-stopper just was terrible with his feet.

Some of Asia's best players ever played on this team. Ali Karimi was just on another level.
