Iran vs South Korea Post Match Ratings

A disappointing showing from Team Melli, but perhaps somewhat expected after a 1-1 draw at home last year to the Koreans, and now missing a number of starters for the Seoul fixture. That said, Skocic's line-up and substitutions left some scratching their heads. I'm not ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater just yet. Lets see what happens on the final matchday and then we can start to make decisions. As for the ratings...

Abedzadeh - 7 - Letting in the first goal, no matter how strong and unexpected it was, is on him. Some amazing saves to start the second half, and even after that as well. Game could've easily been 4-0.

Mohammadi - 5 - Came off after half-time, which says something about the coaching staff's opinion of his play in the first half, and also his sudden inability to contribute going forward. Not sure what we do with a mediocre LB who can't contribute on offense anymore. Not sure what Milad himself does to fix his play.

Hosseini - 6 - solid all around, although the defense was a bit of a mess. Maybe too many changes at one time? I didn't catch any mistakes from Majid though.

Kananni - 6 - great work in the air throughout the game, and a strong, physical presence on the ground. I'm very happy with his work.

Khalilzadeh - 6 - I didn't catch the knock he took, but appreciate that he tried to play through it and also out of position. No glaring mistakes, but again, the entire line seemed out of whack. He was matched up on Son's side, which is a credit to his performance. BTW, Son was HEAD AND SHOULDERS the best player on the pitch, even with his missed goals.

Noorafkan - 3 - generated nothing going forward and didn't organize the defense on the back end. He is a better player at LB. Was wasted at DM and not a contributor in any sense -- as a passer, defender, etc.

Amiri - 5 - the hustle was there as always, and outside of a few crafty link-ups, did very little to move the ball up (a common theme in our midfield). Continues to be a good role player, but we were asking too much of him with this line-up.

Hajsafi - 2 - oh my goodness. I've been a defender of keeping him in the squad because of his versatility and our need at LB. But this was insane. He is incredibly slow, missed a clear shot on goal (or dish to Gholizadeh) early on. Then invisible for large portions of the game otherwise. Should never be in midfield again, but likely should be out of the squad altogether!

Nourollahi - 5 - generated chances going forward, and made his usual defensive contributions. Solid, if unspectacular.

Gholizadeh - 5 - love his dribbling ability, but nothing ever comes of it. He loses the ball (including once in front of goal), or makes a bad pass afterwards. Made the cross for the one shot on goal we had. Doesn't move well off the ball and was caught flatfooted a few times. There is talent here, and hustle, but it seems his footballing IQ is fairly low. He doesn't know how to put it together!

Azmoun - 3 - the midfield gave him little service to work with, and he wasn't ready to play for so many minutes (COACH?!), but boy did he do nothing! One header and it was directly at the keeper...and it may not have needed to be a diving header anyhow. I really worry that Sardar's recent success is a product of playing for the best team in a bad league. We will see what develops at Bayer.

    SUBS
Gholami - 4 - was playing out of position for his first cap. Some are being very hard on him. Yes, he didn't have the pace needed to be at RB and was beaten a few times. Yes, he was nervous and lost some balls. But he isn't the reason we lost, not by a mile. Showed some good footwork and decent defending. I'm glad he is one of three promising young players who got capped today.

Sayyadmanesh - 5 - physical, quick, looked dangerous and had a great cross. Then missed a chip into goal, perhaps trying to get too cute. Wish he had come on earlier!

Ansarifard - NA - not on for long enough, but didn't show much anyhow. I see why he's the #4 striker now.

Hosseinzadeh - 6 - not very quick, but made quality runs on and off the ball and looked physical in play. I'm impressed! Would love to see him get more time after locking in his first cap today.

Mehdipour - 5 - decent passer of the ball, but not impressive. Not sure why we're introducing older players to TM...

OVERALL: I'm concerned that Skocic isn't able to lead us against tougher opposition. This wasn't a damning performance, but his decision making with the line-up and subs (and their timing) makes you wonder if he can handle tougher team and being put up in a corner (with unavailable players).

With that in mind, I love that we finally started using some young talent, and would like to see them featured more over the next year as we prepare for the WC and figure out our squad. We have clear issues with depth, particularly in the midfield and on defense. Not even our starters in these areas are clear. Its time to phase out some old/underperforming players with the young talent we saw today. Lastly -- we only had an outside shot at Pot 2, so I'm not too beat up over it. Finishing first or second in the group doesn't matter, so lets focus on prep for WC2022 now! We need many friendlies, with varying degrees of quality, to test the possibilities of our squad.

        - Abedzadeh : 3 (killed the game, beiro has weird moments but never seen gift the opponent a goal like this recently. The double save was nice but too late)

        - Milmo : 2 (was a big fans, he is terrible)
        - Hosseini : 5
        - kanaani : 6 (did the job, best player for us)
        - shoja : 5 (did what he could in this position)
        - nurafkan : 4 (only look good against weak opposition or when provided space/time)
        - hajsafi : 0
        - nour : 4 (some good things some bad ones)
        - amiri : 2 (cannot control basic pass. Instead of playing him over and over and press him like a citron, some others players should play)
        - Gholi : 2 (freestyle player. Talented but dumbed. Should only be a supersub)
        - azmoun : 5 (difficult game with no service. Good passes but a big chances missed)

Skocic : 0 (terrible line up which is useless to win the game and useless to use this game as a friendly and try some good alternatives) + 0 (gholami sub omg) = 0

        - gholami = 0
        - mehdipour = 5
        - allayar = 4 (what a missed chance)

Maybe I’m in the minority here and want to stay positive, but I think we got really unlucky in terms of the game plan failing

Shoja’s injury and Gholami coming in at RB was the changing point that gave Korea the momentum. Even then, we still kept South Korea at bay until Son’s fluke goal. Had Abedzadeh saved that I would’ve imagined we could’ve kept the defensive structure and maybe counter attacked and scored a late goal.

Either way let’s remember this game doesn’t really matter.. anyone who thought we were getting pot 2 is delusional, considering how many games have to go our way in Conmebol and UEFA..

This was a glorified friendly match. One in which we didn’t have 5 starters. No Taremi, no ARJ, no Ezatolahi, no Moharrami and no Ghoddos…

Skocic- 5, game plan fell apart once Shoja got injured. His biggest flaw today was the positioning of the players.. Gholami at RB, Hajsafi starting, Noorafkan at CDM were all head scratchers for me. Defensively solid until the sooti though.

Abedzadeh- 6.5, besides the sooti I thought Amir was fine. There is no goalkeeper controversy in my opinion. Amir is clear cut #1.. yes the goal he conceded today was absolutely atrocious but he redeemed himself.

Milad- 4, horrible ball control and no technique in tight spaces.. poor guy

Kanaani- 7, our best player today IMO.. had a lot of great aerial clearances and kept the game close when Korea could’ve scored more.

Majid- 6, average for me. Had some good tackles and looked slow on some occasions. Still a better CB than Shoja though.

Shoja- 6, not nearly as bad as I thought for a right back. He’s clearly much better at RB than he is at CB somehow lmao. Looked awfully fatigued though and gassed. Qatari stamina got to him. Also has no offensive abilities whatsoever..

Nourollahi- 5.5, doesn’t have the composure necessary.. lost possession a lot. I like his hustling but he’s nothing without a good CDM/CM next to him

Noorafkan- 4.5, looked really poor at CDM.. horrible positioning and giveaways. He’s a much better left back

Hajsafi- 3, not even sure what to say.. how this guy even gets called up astonishes me lmao. He’s just not it.

Amiri- 5, good hustling but otherwise pretty bad. Isolated by himself and lost control of the ball multiple times.. poor giveaways, bad composure, bad shooting, just not his night..

Gholizadeh- 5.5, has some creative moments but just lacks football IQ sometimes.. plays with his head down almost. Needs someone overlapping him, otherwise he’s useless by himself in tight spaces without an option to pass to.

Azmoun- 5.5, not much he could’ve done today. He can’t really play solo striker… no service to him whatsoever besides that one cross from allahyar. Did OK today and had a great pass to Allahyar who should’ve buried his chance.

          SUBS:

Gholami- 4.5, poor kid is too slow and doesn’t have enough technique to play RB. He’s a solid CB but a huge head scratcher for me that skocic subbed him in instead of Esmaeilifar. Hardani was sorely missed…

Mehdipour- 5.5, invisible. Had okay distribution but reminded me of sarlak when he comes in for his 30 minute cameos… a better player overall than sarlak though so I’m glad he was subbed in, instead of him.

Allahyar- 5.5, didn’t really do much besides provide some energy. Had a good cross to Azmoun which was nice but he really should’ve scored his late chance. Heyf..

          Hosseinzadeh- N/A

          Ansarifard- N/A

Overall let’s not be too pissed. We almost needed a loss to wake us up and get us out of our comfort zone. We were missing most of our best players and we had already qualified. Let’s focus on the World Cup preparations..

            - Abedzadeh: 5.5, the mistake that let in the first goal worsened the dynamics that had already deteriorated after Shoja was subbed off. He partially redeemed himself with the double save in the beginning of the second half.
            - Kanaani: 7, our best defender and probably our best player for 90 minutes. He saved us multiple times. Played with motivation and near the end was the only one who played with passion to at least get a consolation goal.
            - Hosseini: 6, solid defending. He is back and hopefully he could stay healthy.
            - Shoja: 6, up until he was subbed off, Korea and Son did not have a real chance.
            - Milad Mohammadi: 5, did ok but he has lost his speed and he can not perform as WB anymore. He is still young and could get it back.
            - Noorafkan: 4.5, out of poisition, out of sight
            - Hajsafi: 2, He has been done for a while. He should not be called again and we need a nice farewell party for him.
            - Noorollahi: 5.5 Played with gumption but he was not as effective as the past performances
            - Amiri: 4, THE worst performance by Vahid Amiri. He was off. A couple of shots on goal were under par. Did not create any chances like his past performances.
            - Gholi: 4.5, worked hard yet he needs to find his mojo before the WC. His second half crosses were awful.
            - Azmoon: 5, did not really get any good serves but was active. The only good one by Sayaadmanesh, bounced in front of him and he had to do a low header that did not have much power. A lower bounce and it would have been a volley in the back of the net.
            - Gholami: 1.5, very ineffective, immediately became the Achilles' heel of the team after he was subbed in. Coaching staff's second biggest mistake after starting Hajsafi.
            - Mehdipour: 4.5, did ok. No sparks of brilliance. Doing well at Esteghlal does not directly translate to continental stage.
            - Sayaadmanesh: 7, our best sub. Breath of fresh air. His chip could have been a goal if he was in top shape. He is one of the main reasons there is some hope for the future.
            - Ansarifard and Hosseinzadeh: Not enough time to judge.

Skocic: 2.5, did have a game plan that was not executed well and he was at fault because of his lineup (mainly Noorafkan and Hajsafi). Should have not started Noorafkan in Saeid's place and should have not started Hajsafi. His first sub was a disaster and waited too long to replace Hajsafi. Shoja's injury in the first half threw things off for him but he did not adjust well. His halftime coaching was not effective like the past.

            Go TM!

Guys what game plan? To park the bus and counter against a team that I genuinely believe is weaker than us on paper? CQ masterminded that game plan with a proper counter attacking plan and proper defenders. This coach is useless. We can not afford to keep him for the world cup if we are to avoid an embarrassing campaign.

                This game taught us some major lessons;

                1. From a tactical perspective we were a BIG zero. Our coach showed little ability. First, he totally missed to predict how Korea is going to play, then he chose a wrong line up and formation for the team, third, when he saw team is not functioning was unable to make timely and decisive changes. Korea's tactics were spot on. Pressing up front. Worked perfectly for them!
                2. What the heck is this team's plan for younger players? Bench warmers? if not, they need experience and Skocic needs to come up with a plan. Skocic reminds me a lot of Branko who only relied on 11 old players and never brought new blood.
                3. A National team cannot be built relying on 2-3 players. No Excuse!

Abedzadeh: I said this before a million times and I say this again. When it comes to goalkeepers, experience is # 1 factor for an important game!
Milmo: low performance (do we need him or should he be replaced by a younger player)
Hosseini: Showed he is still okay
Kanaani: He is our most consistent performer
Shoja: I like him and I don't like him
Noorafkan: Plays like a little girl
                Hajsafi: Retirement
                Noor: Out of shape
                Amiri: Still okay
Gholi: Never liked players like him. Too much hugging the ball, little brain
                Azmoun: What a disappointment.
                Gholami: Okay but needs experience
                Mehdipour: Good prospect, needs experience
Allayar: Full of energy. He should have been a starter

Overall this was a poor game.. I understand we were missing key players but this easily could've been 5-0 finish.

                  - Hajsafi and Gholami need to be FAR FAR away from TM as possible. I rather have a 50 year old Bagheri on the pitch over Hajsafi at this point.
MilMo needs to seriously be dropped from TM until he gets his game together. I haven't seen hardly anything good from him since 2018.
I can't wait until PAG is back! Always felt like the back line was more under control with him.

                  - After that blunder by Abedzadeh, I'm worried about him. I don't recall ever such blunder from Beiranvand.

                  - After today, if anyone thinks Skokic is better than CQ, then you simply don't know football and your judgment needs to be seriously questioned. Skokic is good against these weak Arab teams, but nowhere is he the man to lead us against stronger Asian teams like Korea, Japan, Australia, or even Saudi. Just imagine how bad it will get once we play top teams in Europe or South America.

                  - Players like Taremi, Jahanbaksh, Ghoddos, Ezzatolahi are BADLY needed.

Amir - 5 : Every players makes mistakes. Nice to see him no completely collapse mentally after his sooti which is not typically the case with certain other goalie in our roster

Milad - 6 : not as bad as some think he was. didn't make any defensive mistakes and offensively didn't get any support when he had the ball

Kanaani - 7 : Couple of good interceptions, no major mistakes

Majid - 6 : One mistake when pressing, but overall solid

Shoja - 5 : did okay while he played. Did have bone headed late tackle in the first half that on a different day could have been a card

Noorfkan - 4 : lost defensively, out hustled and out powered. Turned the ball over to many times and was poor off the ball

Nourollahi - 5 : had may one or two good press in the first half, otherwise same as Omid

Hajsafi - 2 : Bad on the ball, off the ball. is a net negative no matter how you look at it. Had he not messed up that early in the match, the game could have gone a completely different direction.

Amiri - 4 : One of his worst performances in a TM shirt. Sloppy passing, confused.

Gholizadeh - 5 : Needs more than a couple of nice dribbles here and there to keep his spot. Poor vision, too selfish and some bad crosses today.

Sardar - 5 : Didn't get much service, but the one time he did, he couldn't make it count

Gholami - 3: My guys forgot he is a RB and not a CB this match. Way too narrow, gave the Koreans too much space and was always one step behind.

Mehdipour - 5: at least better than all other MFs. although the bar is low

Allhayar - 6: brought much needed energy. created more than any other player. would be an 8 or 9 if he scored that chance.

Skocic - 2: Awful in every way. Predictable tactics, bad lineup (WTF is Hajsafi doing that high up the pitch), Bad subs. Simply out coached. I could write a novel breaking down everything he did wrong today, but let's leave it at that.

If you think a front three of Son, Hwang and Jo along with arguably one of the best CB in Asia in Kim Min Jae and a respectable midfield is “weaker than us on paper” without Taremi, ARJ, Moharrami, Ezatolahi, and Ghoddos then I don’t know what to tell you…

Some of us need a wake up call.. Our midfielders like Hajsafi, Noorafkan and Nourollahi wouldn’t even make the bench for most decent national teams let alone start…

I just watched the highlights again, and would like to change my rating for Nourollahi to 2. Over committed on his tackle on Son's first goal which gave him all that room to take the shot, and on the 2nd goal he failed to mark the guy who gave the assist.

Ive said this for so long. Nourollahi is a good presser, he has decent energy levels, occasionally he an take a good long shot...But he is horrible when it comes to passing range, creativity, first touch, and general defensive play. He gets exposed often 1v1, fails to track runners, and in general has been in dire need of replacement for a while. Some people here defend the guy like he is their unborn son, but reality is a player with higher base technical level is a requirement in the next 8 months if we want to show anything at WC. Yasin Salmani may be that guy but needs a lot of trust + work from a qualified coaching staff, something that looks unlikely at this stage.
