It's not just the bookies-it's the English and American analysts as well. Alexi Lalas and Edu, while uneasy about the possibility of playing Ukraine, seem to be quite comfortable with the other opponents--Lalas wants the U.S. to temper England's arrogance--frankly, I don't find them that arrogant-- and avenge the heartbreaking loss to Iran over two decades ago. Those of you who are old enough might remember the excessive overconfidence exuded by some U.S. commentators prior to the game in 1998. One writer downplayed our national team by describing its game as "sand soccer". And a former national team player, in his attempt to present Iran as a minor obstacle, simply stated:" You go against Iran and get your three points..."

Lalas, for his part, has expressed overconfidence many times before and, on most occasions, he's turned out to be wrong. Some soccer enthusiasts are fixated on the notion of an easy vs a difficult group. Personally, I wouldn't belittle any team (to my knowledge, both the U.S. and England have comported themselves well on the field) in our group and, if team Melli finds itself a target of this form of narrow-mindedness, it should try to use it as fodder to nurture unity and cohesiveness among team members and face the opponents, just as it successfully did four years ago, with abundance of poise and confidence.
