I predicted this game will be cancelled and it did! With the amount political pressure that was mounting up, there was no way for this game to go on.

It is a sad decision for football, for football players and all the fans who looked enthusiastically at this event, specially those who live in Canada and went through arranging to attend the game and enjoy its excitement.

In a way, however, I am happy this saga is over! This game had no preparation value whatsoever and with the controversies surrounding it, it actually had a potential for a lot of negative media coverage. Something the team did not need at this point. Our players are under a lot of pressure already. They didn't deserve to have more.

Good luck to both Canada and Iran football teams! Cancelling the game is not the end of the world!

god damn, this is such a dark day in TM history. for many reasons.

everyone's frustrated. as someone living in LA, i'd be doubly pissed if TM was supposed to play a match in LA and then canceled. big letdown.

I have no doubt that IFF is incompetent, but this isn't their, or Estili's fault. arranging the friendly in the first place was kind of a feat. i was impressed. a shame it's canceled. i especially hate that this will now be one of the "narratives" the western press sprinkles in any time there's TM coverage in the months leading to the WC. instead of talking about azmoun or taremi, they'll be talking about how "iran's preparations were marred by issues, including opposition in canada to Iran blah blah....". this incident took away our team's right (and the right of all iranians) to FINALLY enjoy a rare few months of positive global coverage before Qatar WC that shows us as equals and worthy competitors vs. a pariah terrorist state. Unfortunately, the stink of this story won't go away. Canada Soccer took away a valuable friendly from us, but they also smeared TM's reputation in the process. The hypocrisy is astounding.

What sucks now is that IFF can point to the politicization of this canceled friendly and use it as an excuse for generally poor preparations. it plays right into their "there are forces acting against us, we're trying our best but the world is bullying us" BS narrative when in fact they're probably taking 2 hour lunches and leaving the office at 5pm.

IFF is a microcosm of how everything in iran works. underqualified idiots assigned to posts they don't deserve, no accountability, no transparency, lies, corruption.

Also - where the fuck is our spineless, bi-orzeh, fatboy coach in all this? where's his statement, his leadership, his backchanneling to the press to condemn Canada's actions?

Its a sad day to see iranians go against iranians and starting hating on each other.

IR is very happy about this decision as it gives a strong excuse to blame their Incompetence on "ENEMY".

Sorry but that is the reaction of a few loud minority. As One-sided a hit-job as I have seen. That Zhaleh whatever just making crap up. What a fool and what a tool. I am sure MBS and his whore Rajavi approve.

I won’t hold my breath for Canadians to cancel games against KSA, China, US, and others. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Lol few days ago we had to 2 friendles (Canada, Equador) and today we have no friendlies

I mean Im not even upset. Because I fully expected something like this to happen. This is Iran after all. Politics get mixed with sports, and we have an incompetent federation and government. Why whould this come a suprise? The cycle is just repeating itself for the millionth time. I do feel bad for those who had looked forward game and especially bad for those who had made preparations and bought tickets.
But let this be a lesson. With Iran, you cant make plans and spend money doing so. Its not a safe investment (economically AND emotionally)

so many mixed emotions here. on one hand i'm angry with canada's hypocrisy. on the other hand this is the result of 40+ years of IR policies, which have alienated them completely. they're a punching bag for any politician who wants to score cheap political points without retribution.

Interesting thought exercise that came to mind when i was following the 2014 JCPOA negotiations and had to hear right wing US politicians spew nonsense about iran as they tried to sabotage the deal.

Iran may be the only country in the world, where a western politician (especially in the US, I guess canada too) can literally say ANYTHING, tell ANY lie or exaggeration about the iranian regime without consequence.

For example, if tomorrow a prominent western politician said "Iran is the number one state sponsor of terror and sources confirm that many of their players also have IRGC connections", there'd be zero consequence for that politician. maybe some rebuke on twitter, but no consequence.

Now imagine if that same politician made a similar, or even less outrageous statement about any other national team.

Similarly - a world cup commentator could say something semi-inappropriate about any other of the 31 world cup teams and lose their job. Say something outragoeus about iran on the air ("well, it seems they left their magic carpets at home today") - no consequence.

Iran (and in effect, iranians) are a punching bag with no friends in the west. It makes me sad and angry, both towards the arrogant west and toward the IR for putting us in this position.

what i loved most about my trip to russia in 2018 was that i could yell iran at the top of my lungs, take pride in my heritage publicly, and it was 100% OK. what made it OK, safe and appropriate was football. TMs loved by iranians because it gives us a forum to connect with and celebrate our heritage and identity in a way that's pure and free of the baggage of politics, religion, etc. I absolutely hate that this story (which has gone global, I saw it on ESPN today) is now part of this team's story heading into the WC.
