While Team Melli was gearing up to play the Canadian men's national team on Sunday, June 5th in Vancouver, today Canada Soccer announced the cancelation of the event after facing pressure from a group of activists that demanded the game be blocked and wanted the Canadian government to refuse visas to Iranian soccer players.

Sports and cultural exchanges provide ordinary Iranians a rare opportunity to connect with the global community and take part in events that show the humanity of the Iranian people, who have long been demonized and dehumanized because of the actions of the government. Sports have often served as an occasion for people to come together around the world - when tensions are high between countries, sports are supposed to be neutral ground.

The targeting of sports exchanges conflates the Iranian people with their authoritarian government, which will only hurt ordinary people and fuel the tensions that cause human suffering and the death of civilians. There may not be many satisfying tools to hold Iran's rulers accountable, but in the struggle for agency we can't turn against one another and allow ordinary people to suffer.

So just doing some numbers in my head, and what financial fuckery Canada Soccer is responsible for:
I alone had planned for the following:
- 8 tickets to the match (over $1,500 USD)
- 3 nights in a Vancouver hotel (over $1,000 USD)
- booked restaurant reservations for all meals over 4 days ($1,200 USD; assuming $100 per meal for our group, which is a low estimate)
- merch, snacks, drinks at BC place ($$$)
- Any touristy stuff our group would have done in Vancouver (parks, gardens, whatever)
Literally thousands of dollars that would have gone to local businesses, restaurants, workers, organizers, etc, etc (including Iranian restaurants in Vancouver that folks here kindly had recommended to me)
Now scale that up for all the other local and out of own visitors.
WTF were they thinking??? Is Alinejad and her cabal worth that much? Does MEK really have that much worth to Canada? It's mind boggling.

Put all thier eggs in one basket and not having the level foresight as even some casual fans, is 100% IRs fault.

You simply cannot risk 75% of you world cup preparation on being able to enter and play in a country which you have bad political relations with. Not having a backup plan (a friendly lined up in Tehran or Doha on the 14th), and wasting time negotiating with El-Salvador and Ecuador when there's already people calling for TM not be allowed in Canada is moronic.
